There is a sub trunk on Ebay that once belonged to Harry Houdini. I'd like to kind of copy it if I can, but how does one go about figuring out the measurements from a picture? I'm not sure if one is allowed to post links or not here so pm me if you can not find it. Don,

I could only find one sub trunk on E-bay and it was brand new not owned by Harry, if that's the one its the same as mine and built from plans, it is made from one sheet of 8' x 4' x 3/4" ply so from those figures you can work it out. Or just buy the plans but I don't know the source, I purchased them second hand from a friend.
cheers BJ

Don,
I have seen the Sub Trunk you speak of. It was pretty cool looking. I would just forget figuring the actual size of that trunk and just build one to fit you and your assistant while maintaining the look of the old Houdini Trunk. Just save the pic from Ebay and use it as a reference point. Hope this helps, Chance

Don,
Wolf is spot on about building the size you need. Cardboard and tape are great workshop friends. Mock ups help with proportion and scale. Once, I used a friends Sub Trunk and I looked like a five year old singing a sexy song at the Apollo. I was 4' 8" tall and the box was chest high, my arms barely reached to hold the hoop screen. Ridiculous! Kregg

Just checked it out it looks great. There is a picture with a person in it but its a kid if you can guess his height you should be able to work scale out from that.

The 1896 trunk is huge.Count the number of latches. There is a film clip of Theo preforming with it in the 1930's.

Nice trunk. For 50,000 he better have certifiable authentication on the built by Houdini claim. I feel sorry for him trying to move it on Ebay at this time of year.
I wouldn't want to build a trunk out of one sheet of plywood. Not for us big guys. The one I built used 2 sheets. Martin

I'm not sure how one would go about authenticating it but I do know the guy is a collector.

On page eight of Christefer's "Houdini" there is an early posed picture of Bess leaning against the trunk. Neither of them are very tall by todays standards, but the trunk comes above their waists. If it is made with twelve inch strap hinges, it scales out around 3'6"x5', if they're ten inch hinges, more like 3'x4'6". Big. I remember it looking big in the Hardeen film. This was only the second sub trunk ever built.

Hey MagicalPirate
I know it's a tight squeeze. When I built it I weighed 250 pounds and it was a real effort getting in and out. Thankfully I have dropped 50 punds since then.

You could always ask what size it is.
