Hi guys!
You see, I have this "problem," and I hope somebody could give me an advice. I love manipulation (cards, cigs, balls, thimbles, etc.). In fact I have the 3 vol. set of Card Manipulation (J McBride), 2 of Magic on Stage, and bits of World Class Manipulation. I also have some canes and candles, and the #2 lecture tape by Fantasio. I've got cards, thimbles, and other things. Now, I can't see how to put all that stuff (which I think is great, I would say, more than necessary) together in a manipulation act. Apart from the theme, character and the theatrical aspect (which I have some ideas on), how to combine the movements, I mean, body loads, stealing, etc. I would like to receive some information on that, if there are any books, videos, whatever on routining. Thanks a lot. Karl.-

First of all try to make it different. Because, there are at least 2.584.346.456 magicians out there who do this kind of manipulation act with those same props. Personally, I don't even think to do an act with those props. I like them, but they are over used.

Always remember do NOT try to do an act that only impresses you or your magic friends. That is NOT what it is about. Make an act that is entertaining for the lay people you plan on performing it for.
This may seem really simple of an idea but I would say 90% of all magicians doing manipulation forget this simple principle. Unless your doing a contest act for magicians, then it just does not make sense. Work on being creative and thinking outside of the box. Instead of looking at magic tapes for act inspiration, look at the world around you. Look at culture, music, art etc. So many ideas can be sprung from them. Kyle

Now that you have a bag of tricks, read the instructions and know how they work. Toss it!
Put on some magical music and imagine THE GREAT DANNE walking or appearing on stage. What does he do first... what follows? Kregg

Kregg,
Great suggestion. I bring play and imagination into my creative and work process. One might do the work suggested in Cameron's book The Artist Way. Of course magic music can be anything that is magical to you. I started in the 70's with Jazz. Over the years I have used children's songs to electronic music. These days I am playing around with a drum machine I picked up at my roving magic store for $5.00. (AKA Garage Sales) You might also take notes to help you remember where the best place to put your props both for table pick up or body loads. Watch old films for ideas of alternative props. This morning while flossing my teeth with a sample from the dentist, I realized it is the same shape and about the size of a quarter. It is a bit light so I am know thinking of ways to make it heavier. Enjoy the process. Be safe and creative....... Harris

Thanks guys!
Kyle and Kregg, great advices. In fact, my idea, aside from the act's plot, is to dive people into a magical momentary world. I realize it's not easy, I would like to know if you went through the same difficulties as me. Thanks again to you all! Karl.-
