Hello everyone!
What do you love (or hate) about magic websites?

I just want to preface that I am not trying to advertise. I am genuinely asking for your honest opinions.

I'm Peter X, a magician who recently left my day job and taken the leap into being a full-timer. I've always loved performing and creating magic, and now I'm trying to build a place that actually serves magicians and creators and not just sell to them.

I wanted to reach out to y'all and get your input on a few things:
1- What do you think makes a magic website great?

2- What features do you love when browsing or buying magic?

3- What drives you crazy or makes you leave a site instantly?

4- Do you prefer curated selections or massive inventories?

5- What's most important for you? Demo videos, honest reviews, community forums, cheaper products, free stuff/shipping, quick customer service?

6- What is something you wish more magic sites did/had?

7- Magic creators - I'd love to know what you'd like to happen when working with magic production companies?

I'd love to hear your uncensored opinions please. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Our goal is to support magicians and the magic community. I always try to promote magic creators and brick-and-mortar shops and venues, because I believe they're the heart of what keeps magic alive and growing.

Thank you in advance for all your feedback. Your input will directly help me, and possibly, other magic shops improve.

For a business that has a large inventory, I like a site that’s well organized and has a good search. Some don’t.

I prefer a site with a clean organized look. That doesn’t mean it has to be sterile and boring.
I like Penguin and shop with them a lot, but for me their site is too way too busy.

Create a strong name and logo treatment for your business. Make sure it’s ownable.

Many sites don’t have a strong branded look that stands out from the rest. Tannen’s is one that does.
They did a nice job when they redid their site. Research your competition.

There’s a few thoughts.

I've seen this mentioned by several other people and it's something that really bothers me, too: A small thing perhaps, but when a magic dealer's website has small thumbnail images that invite the user to "Click Here to Enlarge the Image", then when you click on it the pop-up of the image is the exact same size as the previous small image you clicked on! The fact that it's an utterly pointless waste of the customer's time to have the "full size" image be the same size as the preview thumbnail is very frustrating. To me this indicates that the owner of the website can't be bothered to test and preview their own site to make sure that all of the links and images are functional, it shows a lack of attention to detail and a sloppiness that makes me hesitant to do business with them.

Yeah, that's (yet) another pet peeve of mine, too.

Thank you all for your responses.

So I took this input and feedback from other friends and tried my best to incorporate them. Running my website has been my full time job for a while and I've been pouring all my efforts into it to improve it and gain a bit more traction. If you want to know more about me, please check the About M&C page. I am not making much, but I am so passionate about magic and love the community so I want to offer the most I can to support it.

Please check it and let me know what y'all think. I would love to know the good, the bad and the ugly. Be as honest and frank as possible. Thank you in advanced! Smile

It depends on what type or level of magicians you are trying to serve? Hobbyists, enthusiasts, or working magicians?

My biggest peeve, and others I talk to, is most sites are just about selling tricks. Nothing about education (guest speakers/lecturers, special featured guests, etc.) Also, most do not give equal importance and content on the business side of performing and being a magician. Or being a entertainer. Promotional materials, websites, marketing, performance markets, equipment, contracts, tools, resources, and materials about the business side of performing and show BUSINESS. Also creating a show and all that it entails.

Best of luck!

That's a really good point. I will work on adding that. Thank you for the feedback! Smile

Thanks for asking. Most sites are all the same or similar, very monkey see, monkey do. This could be a great addition.

I am trying to improve my website and make it more helpful for the magic community, and hopefully, when that happens, I'll get some sales Smile
It is currently my full time job and my passion.

Sounds like a huge task but it will be great for the community and hopefully much different than so many other typical magic sites. I wish you the best in this project/business.
