Semi-famous people names for Mnemonica (or any mem deck) and also instantly know the Redford positions

If you have the positions of every card memorized of a mem deck then you should probably skip this thread.

This thread is not meant for a beginner, this thread is meant more as an academic fun concept than something to actually be used.

Even though this thread is directly about memorizing the Tamariz Mnemonica stack these names are crucial for also knowing the Redford stack positions. Two stacks for the price of one.

Even though stronger famous people name associations can be devised to mentally link different persons names to the playing cards, do not change the names that I have supplied below because even though the names I am supplying are less well known they can be used for any stack and as a bonus you will instantly know the Redford stack positions. If you educate yourself about the people you don't know they will then become famous in your mind.

First we must mentally link these somewhat famous peaple to each playing card for purpose of memorizing a mem deck. For your convenience here they are in suit order SHoCkeD starting with the Ace of Spades (note that the first three or four letters of these names are especially important):

I happened to pick people names to satisfy the Redford stack because I have not used the Redford stack and have read many good things about it.

You could figure out your own Major System names for any other stack. I personally do not like the Major System for my primary memorized stack because I think there are better ways of memorization of the positions, however I thought it would be fun to use the Major System to encode a secondary stack.

Correction, the voice to text spelled the following incorrectly as "Bargetze" incorrectly and I did not catch it. The correct spelling is "Bargatze". I should have known because I've been in Nate's house when he was a kid and performed with his dad at a youth camp and rode with his dad to a Magic convention, borrowed one of his books etc. Shame on me. Apologies.

For those wanting to use this "semi-famous person names" method:
the assumption is that you have mentally linked the above semi-famous name to each playing card (this alone lets you know the position of any card within the Redford Stack).

Now to link those names to the Mnemonica positions.
There are 52 little sentences/stories below. The last part of each sentence gives the connection to the Mnemonica Stack position. After you have mastered the below 52 stories you will be able to instantly know the position of any card within the Mnemonica Stack and that card's position within the Redford Stack.

1. 4C Nostradamus Four Casts (4C). Imagine his position doing a number one on the 4C.

2. 2H Mush was world war II submarine commander and had a heart-shaped hatch fore and aft making two heart-shaped hatches. Imagine the submarines position is Periscope depth 2 ft deep.

3. 7D Losander (magician floating table has seven diamonds embedded on the vertical part of his table). Pretend imagine the table base has three legs to steady its position.

4. 3C NaLa the lioness Queen in The Lion King movie and she has three cubs each with a three-leaf clover in their mouth (three clubs). Also she positions herself mightily with four powerful legs.

5. 4H Moss, Kate has four breasts with a heart under each. Her tooth fell out while walking on 5th avenue NY (true story). The 5 indicates the position.

6. 6D Ladd (Alan Ladd actor The iron Mistress movie about Jim Bowie knife with six diamonds embedded on the blade of the Bowie knife). Ladd also starred in westerns where he used a six-gun.

7. AS Dostoevsky (Crime and Punishment) Ace of Spades is the death card. Dostoevsky was obsessed with gambling. True. So imagine him rolling dice and hitting the number 7.

8. 5H Morticia of Addams family and her five lovable family members. And they ate ("8") a lot of food especially Lerch who was 8 ft tall.

9. 9S Nam use Robin Williams "Good morning Vietnam". Note that Spades can indicate death or "ending" therefore we will use the mnemonic memory trick that the radio show ended at 9:00 a.m. each morning. We will pretend that the show was also the 9th position show of the day.

10. 2S Sonny and Cher two spatting couple. On a scale of 1 to 10 their records rated the 10.

11. QH Sadie Hawkins Queen in love trying to catch a husband. There were only 11 bachelors available for the race.

12. 3D Dagwood sandwich with three diamonds embedded at different layers. He also has a dozen scrambled eggs in his sandwich.

13. QC Maggie Simpson (youngest Simpsons) have her face on the queen of clubs and the word Maggie. Note that the Simpsons are unlucky for everyone.

14. 8H Tait (Erik magician with long red beard forming the figure 8 over his heart) and then cutting it off and gluing it to a Valentine to give to his sweetheart on February 14th.

15. 6S Mabel Bell (Alexander Graham Bell's wife, think of her holding an old black telephone receiver to her ear) pretend she is using a rotary telephone and has a spade shaped pen to dial six digits. She called Julius Caesar on the 15th of March (The Ides of March) but did not get an answer.

16. 5S Rush Limbaugh note that Spades can be associated with death therefore after five radio stations Rush Limbaugh died. He was 16 years old when he started in radio at Cape Girardeau Missouri.

17. 9H Dali - Salvador Dali dressed to the "nines" because he was in love with art (Hearts). Note that I originally had the reference of Dali associated with a dog but that could be confused with my later reference to wolfman so I'm changing the mental tie of Dali and Nine of Hearts to be "Dressed to the Nines". For the Mnemonica position we use "Dali when 17 teased a girl with kisses only" (probably true).

18. KC Radar (Mash TV show) was the real king of the mash club keeping it running smoothly. At the start of the show his character was supposed to be 18 years old (this is true).

19. 2D Dame Judi Dench (James Bond M) wearing a diamond ring on her two pinky fingers. Her reign as M lasted almost 19 years.

20. JH Sal Mineo heartthrob. His killer was a pizza delivery guy and convicted at age 20.

21. 3S Ragan president (misspelled deliberately) used three spades to plant a flower at the three branches of government (White House, the Capitol building, the Supreme Court building). Ronald Reagan signed the act that established 21-year-old as the legal drinking age.

22. 8S Mammoth it took eight spades to bury the mammoth, 8 cavemen stabbing a mammoth with a spade. Then they pulled out their 22 caliber rifles and shot the mammoth.

23. 6H Norton of the honeymooners drinking and smoking caused a sick heart. It ruined his double helix 23 chromosome pairs.

24. 10C Rapunzel let down your hair so you can go bowling and knock down the 10 clubs. She was kept up locked up 24 hours a day.

25. 5D Sammy Davis Jr showing off with a diamond ring on each finger of one hand. Sammy Davis had 25 incredible dance steps.

26. KD Nish Panesar British TV villain King of the diamond stealers. After getting the diamonds he ran a marathon 26 mi to get them to his fence.

27. 2C Malcolm X holding a club in each hand defending his beliefs. He was instrumental in Temple / mosque 27 in Los Angeles.

28. 3H Roseanne Cash (Johnny Cash's wife co-wrote Ring of fire along with Merle Kilgore) so three hearts were involved: Roseanne, Merle, Johnny. Or just imagine three red Valentine hearts across her shoulder area i.e her right shoulder, her neck, her left shoulder. The number 28 in the Major System can be associated with a "knife" which could be thought of as causing a scar on Roseanne's head after her brain surgery (true).

29. 8D Ralph Kramden (of the honeymooners) have a picture of Jackie Gleason with the word "Ralph" in the middle of the 8 of diamonds and he has bought eight diamonds for Alice. He makes Alice leap when he says "bam to the moon". "Leap" is associated with leap year which has a month of 29 days.

30. 5C Tony Curtis as Houdini played at 5 night clubs. Tony was a robust man at an even number 30.

31. KS Sish kabob King shish kabob (fictitious name to make my mnemonics work) was a gluttony king. He had a long skewer with 31 pieces of food and lived in the Empire State Building that was built in 1931.

The way you also instantly know the position of the card within the Redford stack is to mentally translate the first three or four letters of the semi-famous name using the Major System. I plan to make another post here in this thread with some more details about these names.

Here are the "Major System" (named for "Major Beniowski Polish officer in 1800s) official rules:

Each digit from 0 to 9 is associated with specific consonant sounds.

Common associations include:
0 = s, z (zero, sounds like "z")

1 = t, d (one downstroke)

2 = n (two downstrokes)

3 = m (three downstrokes)

4 = r (4 looks like capital R, also r is last letter of "four")

5 = l (L is the Roman numeral for 50)

6 = sh, ch, soft g, j (looks like a 6 rotated)

7 = k, hard c, hard g (shapes resemble the letter K)

8 = f, v (f and 8 share similar loops)

9 = p, b (b is a 9 rotated)

Vowels, the consonant "h," and other semi-vowels (w, y) are ignored and can be used as fillers to form words.

Double consonants are treated as a single consonant sound.

When I sometimes use the Major System I do try to follow the above rules, but for "6" I normally just use "sh" and for "7" I normally just use the hard "G" sound "guh".

Note that using the "Major System" I am only using the first TWO CONSONANT SOUNDS from NAME to derive a two digit number for example the "N" and the "R" in "Norton of the Honymooners" (the "N" gives us "2" and the "R" gives us "4" thus 24). Any other letters or words on the row are ignored.

I'm using only the "S" and the "M" in "Sammy Davis Jr." (the "S" gives us zero and the "M" gives us "3" thus 03).

Another example:
"Rover King Richard the Lioheart" means 48 because the "R" gives us "4" and the "v" gives us "8".

Going from semi-famous NAME to a two digit NUMBER is very direct and precise, however going from a two digit NUMBER to semi-famous NAME is a little bit more tedious.
-------------
Major System 52 semi-famous names and my (Glowball) special modifications to the Major System to know the first three letters when going from NUMBER to semi-famous NAME. The first letter and the third letter of the semi-famous name is determined the normal Major System way. My modification is for the second letter (the vowel).

If the two digit number is odd then I made the second letter of the semi-famous name to always be "a" and if the two digit number is even then the second letter is "o" except if the two digit number ends in 6 then the second letter is "i" or "u".

This allows a more definitive construction of the first three letters when mentally translating from NUMBER to semi-famous NAME (the magician's mind does not have to run through nearly as many combinations when going from a two digit NUMBER to a semi-famous NAME because of these precise definitions for the odd and even two digit numbers).

Note about the Major System:
Mentally translating from a NAME to NUMBER has always been easy (no ambiguity) but translating the other way from NUMBER to a NAME has been somewhat problematic because of too many options and mentally having to go through the many combinations especially if the number "1" and or the number "8" is involved (note that most digits will yield just one letter but the number "1" and the number "8" each can yield two letters and if all five vowels were a possibility then mentally constructing the semi-famous name would be much more difficult, but if the particular vowel to use is known then it is much, much easier to mentally construct the semi-famous name from a two-digit number (if the two digit number is odd then the vowel will be the letter "a". If the two digit number is even then the vowel will be the letter "o" most of the time. To do this encoding meant many WELL KNOWN famous names DO NOT work, thus LESS well known famous names had to be used in many instances for the two digit number).

Even the more difficult number to name translation becomes easy to do with practice.

What an interesting approach! I've also taken a similar approach but used my photographic deck images to link back into the Redford Stack for ease of memorization. You might enjoy the technique and its available as a video download through out website called The Redford Stack Memory Trainer.

For serious Redford stack users Patrick's method is definitely superior to what I'm suggesting. Be sure and check his method out.

The weakness of my method is that it is slow at determining the next card (it's pretty good at determining the position of a single card but not great at naming a series of cards nor quickly knowing the top card with a glance at the bottom card).

I decided to abandon the semi-famous people named method and instead just use objects or actions to mentally attach to my existing very famous people names.

I think of of all these new objects as being the color red (so I know it means Redford) and these objects are in a mental picture of my famous people.

I made these new objects to all use the vowel "a" as the first vowel sound that way if going from number to name then I don't have to guess which vowel to use.
