I need to build a large rock to house a machine. This rock should be solid on top so two people can stand on it and in the back there should be steps or a series of ledges so a person can easily climb it. It will probably be about 3 feet tall. Does anyone know how I can make this? I thought about making it out of chicken wire and canvas but I don't know much about the framing, attatching wire to frame, attatching fabric to wire, finishing, etc. any help would be great!

Why not chicken wire and paper mache but you would have to reinforce it from the inside somehow since people will be standing on it

Brian,
Build with chicken wire, canvas and paint. Try to make a frame or utilize a sub trunk or ATA crate which will support your weight on top of the rock. Kregg

Just make sure ya get the dimensions right. You don't want a disaster like in Spinal Tap.

We built a square frame for a mountain out of 2X4 and plywood. This just creates an outline to go by. Then you add foam to give it shape. Once the foam is secured on then you can take Muslim and add a 50-50 mixture of Elmer's glue and water to the fabric. When doing this don't make them all straight...wrinkle the material a bit and this creates some textures. Now it comes time to paint. Create what colors you would like to see it as. First start with your base paint... for which we used a gray color then added brown and oranges to it. It turned out awesome. We added flowers to it just by drilling holes in the fabric.. This creates some greenery. We had two mountains that rotated and on the other side was painted "on town" on plywood. It was very cool and awesome. A lot of fun and a great prop. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
