When you apply this to a routine though do you find that the routine has to inspire you in the first place? Or can you see that there is the possibility of a good effect and then develop it from there?
Chris, strange as it may seem...I always read an effect twice before I even attempt to work on it...1st, I read it as written...2nd, I read between the lines. As I said...it sounds strange, but it works for me! Mike |

Mentors. I have been lucky, in that my business at the time allowed me to travel all over.
Spending time with Fred Kaps, Ken Brooke and lots of work WITH Slydini, and now Armando have had a great influence on how I do things.

Thanks Mike, for fielding that one, and yes, Salinger may seem strange, but then, if there are cookier adolecent's than me in this world, they are few and far between.
My point, Chris, yes, is that magic starts with the stories. The inspiration, the "style" as this post asked about, the message, the point, of a piece of magic all come from stories. (even if you're not verbally telling a story while you perform.) I'm talking about *EXPRESSING OURSELVES* in our chosen ART! *gasp* Preferably this stories come from one's own life. I recognize however, that not everyone has been as lucky as me in their ability to travel, and to experience. In this case, there is nothing wrong with using things from stories you read, which is why I listed 5 or so names out of about 1,000 that have helped insipire me. (was it Bandler who said nothing actually occured, and advocates creating our own personl histories anyways?). Of course optimally, you will be expressing your view, your take, the way you feel about events, real or fictional, and imagine up your own stories, emotions, and ideas to express. I think that living and reading through such stories and ideas is what helps us create our own. |

When I was just starting out it was Ganson's Routined Manipulation Finale where I learned the the Fred Kaps Coin and Glass Routine. What a beautiful routine that is. The most profound influence on my coin magic lately has been from watching and studying Mickey Silver perform on his demo tapes (without explantion) as well as in person.

Most of the above is quite good - I'm surprised to see several very large holes, though. Scotty York's work was groundbreaking, and then there was KORT...
Best, PSC P.S. You might want to consider Victor Farelli, Ed Marlo, Ross Bertram, and Ron Bauer...

I don't know about the rest of you but I find it rare that I find more than 1 routine per book/ video/ DVD that I put into my repetoire. Chris, I'm satisfied with one or two gems from any given book, and I think that's about par for the course. I'd rather have a dozen great effects in my repertoire than a hundred mediocre ones! As far as books go, I also think it's important to match the book to your own skill level. If the material is too easy, you'll be bored; if it's too hard, you'll be frustrated. If you liked Bobo, I would recommend David Roth's EXPERT COIN MAGIC as the next level, followed by Kaufman's COINMAGIC. Those three books alone should keep anyone busy for a very long time! SETH

Hi Seth,
I'd agree with you on those books and have all three, only recently aquired David Roths book so there should be a few gems to learn. As for the being happy with 1 gem per book, I would agree but it is much nicer when you get 2 or 3! Paul, Scotty York and Milt Kort, Can you recommend any of their material, I have recently picked up Scotty Yorks lecture notes but having bought around 12 magic books at the same time last month have yet to work through it. There is some Kort stuff in Bobos if I remember correctly any recommendations? Larry, can you give us an outline of the Kaps routine? Is "Ganson's Routined Manipulation Finale" the name of the book it is in? Stuart, Nice way of looking at things, I like your style...thats given me lots to ponder..Thanks!! |

Chris, I for one cannot reccomend the Kort book (the big one by Stephen Minch) enough. The coin material is great...learn the Rumsey vanish...this will open your minds to all kinds of "things". In addition to great coin magic, there are lots of other "goodies" with cards and dice. There is an egg bag routine without an eggbag...you can use an egg, a ball...or as I have sometimes done...use a silver dollar. Then there is my personal favorite...the vanishing elephant. This has become one of my favorite tricks to do for lay audiences! Get the book...you can thank me later !
