Does Osterlind have an effect where a spectator can remove a card from a BCS deck (in another room if he wishes), and the performer will know which card was removed instantly on receiving back the deck, without spreading through the cards? I seem to recall seeing him do something like that. But, of course, I could be misremembering.

Yes. If the spectator cuts the deck, removes the card cut to, then completes the cut, before handing it back to the performer. This will work with any stack.
