The purpose of this thread is to allow a magician to quickly memorize the suit color pattern of a truly, shuffled 52 card Deck.
This is quite easy after you first understand the eight octal code digits and then how to combine two octal code digits together forming a two-digit decimal number. Each two-digit decimal number will represent a pattern of six playing cards. You will have 64 two-digit decimal numbers that you will equate to a famous person or an object of some kind and you will memorize these 64 things permanently for the rest of your life and be able to use them on any shuffled deck of playing cards. You will also need a Memory Palace that has five Loci. I use a baseball field and the five Loci are: 1. First base 2. Second base 3. Third base 4. Home plate 5. Pitcher's mound This technique has some similarities to the PA or PAO memory techniques but since each famous person or thing represents a pattern of six playing cards, this octal code method should make it much easier (maybe six times easier than PA/PAO). Okay, let's look at some basics. Every three cards is mentally coded as an octal digit (b for a black suit card, R for a red suit card). bbb = 000 = 0 bbR = 001 = 1 bRb = 010 = 2 bRR = 011 = 3 Rbb = 100 = 4 RbR = 101 = 5 RRb = 110 = 6 RRR = 111 = 7 Note that the red suit cards are binary "1" whereas the black suit cards are binary "0". The first column is the actual three card pattern, the second column is the octal binary number, the third column is the decimal single digit. These eight patterns are quickly learned and permanently used. Using the above technique six-cards are quickly mentally converted to a two-digit decimal number. For example: RRb bRb mentally becomes 62. Let's use another example. And let's let's say that the shuffled deck has the first 12 cards in the following pattern: bbR RRR Rbb Rbb The above pattern will equate to 17 and 44. Therefore, the magician will mentally know the famous person or thing that represents 17 is on first base and also the famous person or thing that represents 44 is also on first base. We do the same type of mental encoding for the next 12 cards and put two famous people on second base. Then 12 more cards (two famous people) on third base. And finally 12 more cards (two famous people) on home plate. The above technique accounts for 48 cards, but we also have the final four cards that we will mentally place on the pitcher's mound. We can use the 49th, 50th, and 51st card by using the digits 00 through 07 of our master 64 patterns (and ignore the leading zero when on the pitcher's mound) and then just memorize the final 52nd card to also be on the pitcher's mound. Or we could just remove any four cards from the deck before performing and put those four cards out of sight. Other notes: If you are a memory expert that has already equated the two-digit numbers 00, 01, 02 ... through 99 (such as Harry Lorayne did) you are way ahead of the game and can use the applicable 64 two-digit numbers for this octal scheme. 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 20 21 22 23 ... etc 65 66 67 70 71 72 73 74 75 76 77 Note that with this octal system we never use a two-digit number that has an eight or nine. ------ |

You can permanently memorize a unique action to be associated with each of the 64 famous people or things and then be able to use the Dominic O'Brien PA method so that only one person is on a Loci but is doing the action of the second person or thing.

To make the bases unique from each other. I now mentally have the Big Ben clock tower permanently on first base, a two-horned rhinoceros permanently on second base, a Neptune trident permanently sticking up from third base, a chair with four legs permanently on home plate.
This allows for easier attachment mentally of a famous person or thing to that Loci (base). |

If you want a different list of people or things to associate with the 64 two-digit numbers, here is another list.
I was on the phone for about an hour with Kevin King (a local Nashville memory expert and magician) and he gave me his personal two-digit Major System list and said it was okay to share his list with everyone and asked me to teach him this octal method. Note that he uses these two-digit numbers in many different situations and in many of his memory palaces. Of course we only need 64 of the below numbers to do this octal based method. You can ignore any of the two-digit numbers below that have an eight or a nine in it because they simply will not happen when using this octal-based method. Kevin King two-digit numbers and associated thing (each thing is named based on the Major System): 00. Seesaw 01. Setter (Irish) 02. Sun 03. Swim 04. Sour (lemon) 05. Seal (animal) 06. Sushi 07. Sock 08. Safe (lock box) 09. Soap 10. Ties 11. Tot 12. Tan 13. Dummy 14. Tire 15. Tail 16. Tissue 17. Duck 18. Dove 19. Tape 20. Nose (clown) 21. Net 22. Nun 23. Enema 24. Nair 25. Nail 26. Nacho 27. When performing this as a speed memorization demonstration I will have a spectator shuffle the deck and then from the shuffled deck I have four spectators make sure they have 12 cards each and shuffle them and then each spectator turns their cards face up in two six card spreads. This saves a lot of boring time where I would have to deal 12 cards to each of the four spectators.
So if I have them time me as a demonstration of how fast I can memorize the cards, I do not have to physically go through the deck because the entire deck is already visibly spread on the table. After actually memorizing the deck, I am careful to pick all the cards up in such a way so they are in the order that I memorized them. Now holding the deck face down. I can deal the cards face up as I pre-announce each three card sequence based on the octal codes that I have on first base, second base, third base, home plate, pitcher's mound. |

In the above statement, the term "pre-announce" simply means that I am saying the suit color of the three cards such as "red black red".

77 Ed Byrnes "Kookie Kookie lend me your comb"
I suspect most of you reading this are too young to know about the TV show 77 Sunset Strip and the character played by Ed Byrnes and his famous song: https://youtu.be/MT9QZBGyXjU?si=ELFKyNrAGhsMdScv In my scheme to have 77 it would take six red suit cards to represent a famous person on a Loci. Very unlikely. |

Nelson Dellis (famous USA memory champ) method to memorize suit color patterns for a shuffled deck.
https://youtu.be/cOukDvkTfg0?si=FfM1fdvdCA7NubU- This is a technique to memorize the red, black, red, black, black, red, etc. Sequence of a freshly shuffled deck of cards. Each 3 cards have a possible consonant sound and a possible vowel sound, but only one sound will be used for the three cards, it depends on whether they are in the odd number group or the even number group within the nine cards (in group one or in group 3 for the consonant sounds). Each group of nine cards has the following pattern: Consonant, Vowel, Consonant: The first consonant sound (first letter) represents the first three cards of the nine card group. The vowel sound (second letter) represents the second three cards of the nine card group. The second consonant sound (third letter) represents the last three cards of the nine card group. Nelson's system: RRR "B", "OO" (BOOK) BRR "G,J,Y", "U" (DUKE) RRB "C,K", "I" (HIT) BRB "L", "O" (HOT) RBR "D,T", "A" (BAT) BBR "N", "EE" (BEET) RBB "F", "U" (DUCK) BBB "M", "I" (EYE) 9 CARD EXAMPLE: RBR = D, T BBR = EE BBB = M In the above example the word would be: TEAM? or DEEM? Nelson starts from the bottom of the deck and at call out time has to reverse each three-card group mentally, which I don't like. I think it's much easier just to start at the top so you don't have to reverse anything. Note: I am surprised that he did not use the Major System to get his consonant sounds. But this is a very clever method. --------------- |

I like Nelson's basic method, but I think I'll rework it to suit me (LarFin Glowball). Note that for the consonant sounds I will use the Major System to convert the binary octal to a consonant sound.
Note that I use the red color for binary "1" and the black color for binary "0". RRR 7 "G", "OO" (gOOd)........BRR 3 "M", "O" (mOp) RRB 6 "J,SH", "EE" (shEEt)....BRB 2 "N", "U" (nUke) RBR 5 "L", "A" (lAdder)..........BBR 1 "T,D", "i" (tick) RBB 4 "R", "U" (rUg)...............BBB 0 "S,Z", "i" (silo) For example RRB is binary octal number 6. Therefore I use the letter J sound from the Major System for that pattern (if a consonant). Use EE sound if a vowel (cards in position 4, 5, and 6 of the nine card group are the binary octal number to yield a vowel). The vowels associated with the pattern I arbitrarily permanently assigned. I start from the top of the deck and treat the red cards as value 4,2,1 for the first, second, third card of each group of three adding to their total of 7 or 6 or 5 or 4 or 2 or 1 or 0. If using Nelson's method (or the above modified version) you must create your own word on the fly during performance, you do not have any pre-memorized words because there would be way too many combinations (8 x 8 x 8 = 512 words to pre-memorize). Well, 512 nine card patterns (three digit numbers) could be pre-memorized, but I don't think it's worth the effort versus using the simpler six card method where there is just 64 famous names already pre-memorized to associate with the 64 possible patterns of six cards. See my orange memory Palace of 64 octal codes that start with 00 = the penguin with an umbrella, 01 = Meg Ryan hugging a teddy bear, 02 = tiger woods putting two orange balls, 03 = a three-eyed alien Miss Galaxy beauty contestant strutting in an orange swimsuit, 04 = Popeye four oranges from spinach can etc. Pros and cons (Nelson's 9 card consonant-vowel-consonant method versus The six card Two-Digit famous person method): Nelson's method pros: Fewer things to initially memorize (the eight patterns and their possible consonant and possible vowel sounds). Because nine cards are mentally stored instead of six cards, there may be fewer Loci necessary. Nelson's method cons: No logic to the assignment of the sounds (brute force pre-memorization of the patterns and sounds). The performer must create a person or object on the fly at performance time for the combination of consonant vowel consonant. The six card 64 pattern method pros: Straightforward easy to understand conversion to binary octal and then to two decimal digits. Instant mental conversion of two digits to a famous person or thing because pre-memorized. The six card 64 pattern method cons: Takes more time to initially memorize the 64 two-digit numbers as famous people or things (but the memorization is simpler). ------------ |

I believe the six card 64 pattern method can be improved by reducing the number of Loci to 3 (first base, second base, third base). Eliminate home plate and eliminate the pitcher's mound.
Instead of doing a "P" or "PAO" or "PP" method, use a "PAP" method. This way we mentally store 3 famous people on each Loci (this means we are storing 18 card's suit color patterns on a Loci). Three times eighteen is 54 which is more than enough to handle 52 cards. I suggest we leave the two Jokers in and before starting the trick say that we will treat them as black suit cards or if one of the Jokers has some red in it we could say we will treat it as a red suit card and the other joker as a black suit card. If we are using just the 52 cards we could just pretend that there are two imaginary black cards at the bottom of the deck so that third base would always have these two imaginary black cards at the very end giving 54 cards. Here is my simple P,A type list for the 64 patterns: 00 Penguin, Umbrella 01 Meg Ryan, hugging 02 Tiger Woods, putting 03 Miss Galaxy, strutting 04 Popeye, spinach 05 Snowman, carrots 06 King Henry, spying 07 Money Penny, Hat tree 10 JFK, mooning 11 Godzilla, breathe fire 12 Frankenstein, choking 13 Bowler, bowling pumpkin 14 Babe Ruth batboy, big bat 15 Goliath, spear 16 Samurai, Pagoda 17 Fort Jackson recruit, gas mask 20 Laila Ali, boxing glove 21 Sinatra, dice 22 Sheriff, handcuffs 23 Shiva, spray rust 24 Spock's wife, Vulcan salute 25 Farmer, shepherd's hook 26 Red Baron, machine gun 27 Sherlock, magnifying glass 30 Pirate, cannons 31 Grim reaper, scythe 32 Leprechaun, yellow ribbon 33 Flintstone dinosaur, stoning 34 Darth Vader, Red laser 35 Marie Antoinette, cake 36 Catwoman, scratching 37 Magician Mr Potato Head, potatoes 40 Minnesota Fats, cue stick 41 Marilyn Monroe, whispering 42 Miley Cyrus, wrecking ball 43 Dr Who, shot glass 44 Tennis player, racket 45 Jack Tut, small pyramid 46 Beatles, drumstick 47 Dracula, biting 50 Elvis, twisting 51 Queen Victoria, holding hands 52 Colonel Kink, spitting sauerkraut 53 General Patton, slapping 54 Dolly Parton, yodeling 55 Tom Brady, deflating 56 Tin Man, oiling 57 Randy Johnson, ketchup bottle 60 Lesley Stahl, Pocket watch 61 Elizabeth Taylor, Marriott 62 Thor, hammering 63 John Travolta, pointing 64 Bagpiper, bagpiping 65 Superman, kryptonite 66 Andrew's sisters, bugling 67 Cupid, arrows 70 Goose, goosing 71 Coach Belichick, frowning 72 Dwarfs, soap bubbles 73 Winston Churchill's wife, smoking 74 Gargoyle, staring 75 Magic Johnson, bouncing 76 Wilt Chamberlain, dunking 77 Edd Byrnes, combing Example: Let's say the shuffled deck happened to be the following: 4C, 5H, 2D, AS, QH, 5C, 8D, 10D, 3S, KC, JD, 3C, 10S, 9H, 5S, QD, 6C, 3D, 7S, 4S, 6D, JH, 4H, 9C, JC, 4D, 6H, 6S, JS, 7C, 2H, KS, 8C, 2C, AH, 10H, QS, 7H, 9D, KH, QC, 8H, AC, 8S, 10C, 2S, AD, 9S, 5D, KD, 3H, 7D, Black, Black (the last two are imaginary black cards giving us 54 cards). Then the octal codes would be: On first base: 32 62 25 On second base: 16 30 43 On third base: 35 02 74 The above translates into the PAP mnemonics: On first base: Leprechaun hammering a farmer On second base: Samurai cannons at Doctor Who On third base: Marie Antoinette golfing a Gargoyle With the above three mental images, the magician should be able to deal the 52 cards naming their suit color before each card is turned face up. |

Wow, fantastic detail Glowball, super informative (and a bit overwhelming)!
I can’t see myself wanting to do a full deck, but what does seem very doable is using this method for an OOTW presentation. You can use a borrowed, shuffled deck and two participants. Once they’ve shuffled the deck, explain you’ll use about half the deck. Have then cut off about half and hand you that packet. Tell the first participant that you’re going to spread through the cards face up and you want them to look at the cards going by, not trying to memorize any particular cards, instead like the flow of a steam, taking it all in as a whole. You use this as justification for seeing the cards yourself and forming the necessary numbers. Depending on how many cards they’ve cut, you’ll end up with roughly two sets of two digit numbers. You can then repeat this with the second participant so that you have two runs of it to lock in your numbers. Now that you secretly know the red/black order of the packet, you can then perform an OOTW version that uses the methodology of something like White Star or From Hell, with each participant either taking the face down card or putting it into a discard pile. Hope that all makes sense!!?? |

1. Use half a deck so the trick doesn't take so long 2. Use the technique to do OOTW Love it! I am not familiar with "white star" nor "from hell". To do OOTW I normally use the method where the magician takes a shuffled deck and spreads it face up towards himself and then asks the spectator on each card that the magician randomly pulls out whether red or black. I think that version is Harry Lorayne's Out of This Universe or something like that. I am familiar with another OOTW trick, not sure what it's called, where you use a Si Stebbins and the spectator and the magician take alternating turns and put the face down card onto their color pile or an "unsure" pile. Using your suggestion to memorize the suit colors to do OOTW: (if I understand it right) what I might do is say "I am going to create two hodgepodge piles of cards for you and me to try to mentally decipher the suit color". Then deal the aprox 26 cards face down into two piles which of course they will have all one color and you the magician will have all the other color and hopefully not too much of an imbalance in the number of cards. Then proceed pretty much the same as a normal OOTW. Maybe have a third "unsure" discard pile. Is that close to what you have in mind? Thanks again! |

I am using Ben Pridmore’s system. He was the world champion, memorizing over 50 decks of cards. For that, you combine 3 binaries into one word. With only 5 Pegs and 5 journey points, you can remember 48 cards. Very fast.

To all:
Mr. Mindbender disclosed to me in a pm how his method would work to do Ootw. I'm not at Liberty to disclose how it works. It is pretty cool! Thanks Mr. Mindbender! |

To Spaceman-fx:
Thanks for the info! I am somewhat familiar with Ben Pridmore's System of every two card combination having a pre-memorized famous person or familiar person pre-memorized. This yields 2,752 famous people/card combinations to have pre-memorized. I'm also a little bit familiar with Lance Tshairhart's Shadow modification to that system. This cuts the memorization in half down to 1,376 famous people/two-card combinations to have pre-memorized. These type of systems are geared to competitive memory contests and way more time invested than most magicians would be willing to do (there are a few magicians that that would fit their agenda). The system that I initially suggested above only requires 64 pre-memorized famous names to be associated with two-digit numbers so minimal effort is required (yes, it only lets the magician recite the suit color pattern of the deck, but big bang for little effort). I am not familiar with the Pridmore three binary Five peg system that you mentioned. Can you point us to a site or YouTube video that describes it? These memory methods are generally in the public domain because they are not trying to hide the method. In fact, many of them want to publicize their methods so more people will use it. Thanks Spaceman-fx for your post and your help! |

Correction: I said the Pridmore two card system would need 52 x 52 = 2,752 famous people which would be true if more than one deck was shuffled together. But if only one deck was used then the number of combinations would be 52 x 51 which is 2,652 famous people not 2,752.
