Hoping someone can definitely answer this for me.

Are highly props priced props coming into Canada from the US subject to a 25% tariff, in addition to, or in lieu of, customs charges?

Thanks.

From what I read online, the Canadian policy on counter tariffs changed on September 1/25.

https://www.canada.ca/en/department-fina......ffs.html

I received a replacement piece for a magic prop in September 2025 (last month) via Canada Post / USPS, and wasn't charged any tariffs or customs fees. I think the declared value of the item was less than $100.

(As I mentioned in another post, in April 2025 I received replacement parts for a magic prop via FedEx, and they didn't send me any sort of bill until a month later... but I did get charged a brokerage fee, along with taxes and tariffs mixed together. And in May 2025, I received an order of bulk magic tricks and magic kits for BOR sales, and UPS dinged me right away, before clearing the package... again, I got charged a brokerage fee, along with taxes and tariffs mixed together. So, different shipping companies bill in different ways. I suspect if Canada Post was going to ding me for tariffs or customs fees, I would have had to pay them at the post office, or at the door, before receiving my package.)

Thanks, Donald. Yes, I had read your earlier post, but was wondering if there had been any changes since then.

I've paid customs charges on things in the past as well. Some props come through with no charge, while others incur brokerage/customs charges. There never seems to be anything consistent and I never know until I actually get the prop. As you mentioned, sometimes the charge is paid at the post office or door, while other times an invoice comes later from the broker. C'est la vie.

As I said above, I think that the Canadian Government was only charging counter tariffs from March 2025 through September 1/2025.

Also see the info at the link I provided (counter tariffs remain in place for steel, aluminum and automobiles... but those aren't magic props).

Has anyone shipped magic into the U.S. since the removal of the policy that items under $800 were not subject to duties upfront. My understanding now when shipping to the U.S. we will be obligated to pay upfront duty charges, fees and of course postage. This will add pretty substantially to shipping costs for the shipper. Just curious if anyone has had first hand experience with this. Thanks,

John
