A conversation the other night about the apparent decrease in interest in membership organizations made me wonder about this, so I thought I would post the question: Are you a member of either IBM or SAM?

The conversation had nothing to do with magic: we were talking in general about organizations like the Masons, Elks, and many others. We did not reach any "assumed conclusions."

I just joined the IBM this last year (partly based on your feedback, George).

(The last time I tried to make an estimate of the current IBM membership, I came up with somewhere between 10-15K, but I do suspect it is dwindling.)

I was an Associate Member of SAM for many years.

Plus, I was a founding member of a private local magic club for years.

I was an IBM member for many years in Huntsville, Alabama, but moved to a location without a local ring (Portland, Oregon) and didn't keep my membership current. There is a local SAM group, but I feel like I'm too busy with other things and haven't gotten involved. There is also a local magic club (Portland Society of Magicians) that isn't associated with either IBM or SAM, which I'm more inclined to joined.

PCAM member from 1957-64, then IBM since (off and on). Also SAM from 1998-2001

It has always depended on what a local club required more than personal preference.

I joined local ring of IBM about three years ago. At my first meeting, nobody greeted me. No introductions. No structure to the meeting...just an announcement of the night's theme and people getting up and doing something.

I kept at it, and introduced myself to folks, and made some good connections. But meetings got worse, the board was making unreasonable mandates, and I was no longer enjoying the meetings...I would get stressed out. And so recently left.

A friend is in a very active and engaging IBM ring. He loves it and get a lot out of it.

Rings are very unique...if you're in a good one, they're great.
