I don't think I have ever posted in this sub-forum, but was intrigued to notice that the name of this sub-forum changed recently from Not Very Magical, Still ... to It's Not Magic, But Close ... . I believe it has been Not Very Magical, Still ... from the beginning in 2001, until very recently (end of November, 2025?). The name change doesn't bother me , it's just sort of curious since things seldom change around this place. I wonder why change it now, after all these years ?

I still think it's slightly absurd that this sub-forum has almost the highest number of posts on the Magic Cafe, but it's a sub-forum that is intended as "a place to discuss things which have nothing to do with magic" ! The sub-forum with most number of posts is Latest and Greatest "a place where folks can discuss the latest rumors, read announcements and speculate about the obvious hyperbole surrounding many of the upcoming products that are released into magicdom." .

Maybe they mean the magic is close by, as in one click away. Not sure, but I agree it is odd in a way.

It looks like most of the posts are in the “two words” and “answer a question with a question “ areas. Hardly anything of any consequence is ever discussed. It used to be more fun when we could discuss just about anything. If some didn’t like the subject, no one was forcing them to participate.

Interesting observation. I think that the discrepancy is simply because there are so many (around 150) sub-categories of magic at TMC and only 1 category of nothing to do with magic. Consolidate some of the magic related categories and of course the optics would change.

This is what is so odd to me. There are many alternatives online in other discussion forums and Facebook groups to discuss anything under the sun, but the Magic Cafe is a discussion forum dedicated to MAGIC. And yet trivial topics such as Answer A Question With A Question, Two Words , and New Game: You're Banned have more replies and views than topics actually related to learning and performing magic.

I think for some it’s a hangout to get away from the magic talk for a moment without having to leave the building.

Maybe they see it like the supermarkets do, the longer they can keep you in there the more money you will spend. LOL

It's a cafe. Sometimes you just want to shoot the breeze with the other customers.

It is funny to me as I have always though the Not Very Magical, Still forum seemed out of place here and some that it attracts seems anti-productive to the overall appeal of the Cafe. Why be here if not interested in magic in the first place? Why encourage off-topic participation? Perhaps it is just not for me, but it just seems oddly out of place.

And I agree with the observation that the Answer A Question With A Question, Two Words, and New Game: You're Banned having more replies and views than topics actually related to learning and performing magic are allowed to continue. It seems these have no productive value and should've been locked long ago. They really serve no purpose to the theme and intent of the attraction to the Cafe in the first place. They seem like a major derailment. They seem like the type of nonsense you would make the kids do in the backseats of the station wagon on a long family road trip. They're fun for the first ten minutes, then become very annoying.

It is great when I can agree with Mindpro on something - LoL

So, the first part of the change is possibly correct - "It's not magic" - when "not very magical" was open to subjective humor.

It is the "But close" that is incorrect.

Is a thread devoted to the "6 - 7" thing far behind ?

Sooooo, they should lock a popular topic that many obviously enjoy and that hurts no one because you find it annoying? Okie dokie.

Yes that would be great, glad you understand! Lol

Actually as I said in my first post "Perhaps it is just not for me."

But looking at it a bit deeper, what does it say when the most popular threads on a magic forum have doing to do with magic?

I don't think it's anything other than that it's a quick and easy thing to do. The magic threads would (hopefully) require quite a bit more time and thought to reply.
Might also be the flaming and bullying in the other sections.

I really don't know. I'd love to see more action in the workers and nothing up my sleeve sections but I'm also not about to spam threads to make it happen.

Sorry if I'm being cranky today.

Might be worth mentioning too that a lot happens in PMs.
