I've always been interested in magic, and I've wanted to practise it for as long as I can remember, but everytime I tried to bring the subject up I got told that it was a waste of time, and that I'll never amount to anything if I do something as ridiculous as practicing magic tricks (I still get that from some people now).
I've just recently decided to go ahead and do it anyway, but I just wish that I hadn't listened to those people as much back then, and that I'd started sooner. Has anyone else ever had this problem, and if so, how did/do you deal with it. |

Sometimes, if you mention that you've got a side career in magic, or it's your hobby or whatever, then there's a tendency among some people to take a dim view of you - they'll put you down as a sad nerd who hasn't got a social life, and probably think that magic gets no better than that 21 card trick performed by a smarmy relative at Xmas.
But don't let that get on top of you. Such people are just a bit narrowminded on the subject. Just ignore them. Or even better - show them that magic isn't as sad as they think it is. Blow them away with some strong material, and they might just change their tune. That said, don't pin all your hopes and dreams on magic. Real life does occasionally need attention now and again RandomDan |

I was never told that. Instead my family told me, "Go where your heart is and the money will follow." Still, I went a different direction with my life - I followed that other magic - science.
I don't regret it but now that I'm approaching retirement age I've rekindled my interest in magic and am performing and learning, learning and performing. Sometimes I wish I had followed magic. I'm a showman at heart, but there it is. Follow your heart. |

Look at david blaine, he does crappy magic tricks, yet makes over 5 million dollars a year. forget the people who give you crap, they're the ones who will never amount to anything and at 40 will be working minimum wage jobs. so keep going, and don't stop. do what you want and you'll always succeed !

I agree with the other posts. Every now and again I'll run into someone who says " Oh, your a magician? How nice for you" I usually ask if they'd like to see something, then do something very visual and stunning. That usually changes their mind!

Never let those kindo of people tell you what you're suposted to do, advices are good, but not those kind of advices, where people don't even know what they're talking about. If you like magic, be a magician, is not tht simple, but irt will be ten times harder to do something you just don't like.

I have practiced magic for over 40 years. I have been a full-timer over 20 years. Along the way, I have had people tell me that you can't do magic for a living. I've had others ask me what I planned to do when I grew up. Without having seen me work, I've had still others smile sarcastically when I told them I did this for a living, and I had my aunt ask me, when I first made the transition to full time, how long I was going to give this before I got a real job.
I answered, "As long as it takes." It hasn't always been easy, but today, I have a lovely wonderful wife. We are raising an incredible son. We have all the amenities of any middle class family and I love my job. Go with your heart and your own instincts. Only you know what sacrifices you are willing to make to achieve your goal. If you need help along the way, we are always here for you!

My family and friends have always been supportive of my crazy exploits. And finally, I was able to perform a huge stage show here in the hometown. I gathered a lot of respect from the people that supported me from the beginning.

I had an agent who told me to not to list magic or mime on my resume, because, "It might could cost me work."
Perhaps the bad perception of the magician was created by annoying trickster's who besmirched an entire field by not knowing when to stop. Magic is an excellent hobby and for many it has proven a great career. When I first started people would tell me that it was, "The work of the devil." My parents urged me to do pursue magic because it encouraged me to read. I happy when people call me a magician. Kregg

Twylight, don't give up because of what other people think. If you like it then do it. I've had no trouble with what other people think though.
Good luck!!! |

Twylight makes a good point. Thanks, Twylight...I learned this lesson a while back.
I've come to the point where I do not tell people I'm a "magician" , but just do it when appropriate. The surprised looks I get. The comments, "...I had NO idea you could DO that!" The compliments...MUCH better than "tooting my own horn", so to speak. I had to laugh when Matt posted, "...they're the ones who will never amount to anything and at 40 will be working minimum wage jobs..." I have to confess, my career took a dump recently. The industry went automated, and I went from $40,000 a year to barely $16,000...so I'm one of those people (at 49) working a minimum wage job (well, I MIGHT make 20 grand this year, but that is STILL half of what I've been used to). I take no offense at that, Matt...I had to laugh...funny how life comes back to bite you in the as*... Regards! Doug |

All you need to do is show them how it can be done. |

When I first started volunteering as a big brother, I was showing my little brother some tricks. I taught him some simple moves that he could practice at home. He told me that he didn't have any cards at home because his mother felt strongly that they were a waste of money. I set him up with a few basic supplies, and he practiced all he could. It was only a matter of time before his mother saw how much he was enjoying himself, and changed her mind about the real value of a deck of cards. Now she is very supportive and encourages him.

When I was younger, my parents were supportive of me practicing magic. When I was about 14 I told them my goal in life was to be a professional magician. They laughed and said, "no, you'll never make it." At first I was very upset and felt like a loser. Then I got to thinking, they can choose my career. So I kept on practicing it. I had to prove them wrong. Now 7 years later I make more money as a magician than I would've ever dreamed. Needless to say, my parents couldn't be happier for me at this point. They tell everyone I'm a magician, and now they are the ones that encourage me to take it a step further... don't ever give up.
