Now I know that someone will eventually remind me of the settings that Tony Andruzzi performed bizarre magick in, IE cocktail parties, cookouts etc. BUT, what I am finding is as I find myself in private situations and the topic of ghosts, goblins and psychic events will occasionally arise, and as I become more known as a reader and studier of these weerd things, I am called to explain them, or demonstrate something. I have taken to carrying my haunted key (a real old key found in a shop, not the standard one) failing that a spoon or key can be bent at times. Does anyone have truly impromptu effects or ideas for effects that could stimulate thought or discussion? I have also whipped up an impromptu pendulum with a necklace, or an Ouija board with lettered cards and wine glass for a planchette. I don't want to do a whole show esp. for free, but a good impromptu showing can open more doors then doing nothing at all.

The $1000 Secret Seance by Docc Hilford starts with an almost impromptu spirit writing effect that is meant to be done at dinner parties to sell future bookings for private or group shows. The effect in itself is powerful, and worth your consideration.

Spirit Messages by Burger
Random cold messages but sometimes you get a zinger of a match, which you take credit for of course. Very flashy and visual. Very minimal stuff to carry around, a few messages, a packet of Zig Zags and an ashtray, but you can borrow that.

There are a couple of things in Sheherazade that are actually mentalism, but can be performed bizarre with borrowed props.

DrNorth,
How impromptu do you want it? There are some truely amazing things you can do with a pendulum! I even carry extras for people that become interested in them (also attached to my card!) If you have a Taort deck with you there are some awesome things there too. But true impromptu you wouldn't have the deck. This is an effect I do with a pendulum, I'm not going to give you secret as I already know when you read it, you will come up with a version yourself! I had in mind to do a pendulum effect one night in an impromptu fashion. I didn't have a pendulum with me so thoughts ran in my head on what to use to make one. I then remembered I had a skeleton key on me! Easy to make a pendulum with that and a shoe string. However! I got a second idea!! The magician brings forth a Tarot deck draped in a silk cloth. Would you like to try an experiment? He removes the deck and shows it. These cards have uncanny abilities! Let me show you. I force a card, square up the deck. I have the card returned on top of the deck. I ask the spectator to cut the deck. Here I use estimation and cut a quarter more of the deck and complete the cut. Magician now deals 5 cards in a row asking the spectator if he sees his card, not to call out what it is. He/she says no, deal another set of 5. This goes on till card appears in a spread of 5. The card now in the row the magician gives a reading from these 5 cards. After the reading I reach into my pocket and remove the skeleton key. I explain that there are may "Keys" in life. "This is one is symbolic, watch!" I place the key in my hand and hold my hand over the cards. When Im over the spectators card the key rolls over. "Looks like the key to your reading is the (whatever it might be) do a conclusion reading from this card. Drop the key onto the thought of card. If you feel the spectators are up for more, make a pendulum from the key and go into another routine. If you use the key as pendulum in the spectators hand and it moves on its own accord, you have strenthend the first effect. Again, you must have these props so this isn't really impromtu, but you could easily borrow a regular deck if you are at someones home. (And yes! You still do a reading!) Enjoy Magickman

Save your your reputation and pass on docc's cocktail spirit messages.......docc takes a very serious subject and reduces it down to a business card effect, how he does it with a straight face and gets away with it, is beyond me.
There are a ton of effects in the complete invocation or Magick and I have found jim magus book on bizzare magick, to have a nice collection of different effects for you to use. |

Thank you one and all, Each idea is a great one or a great direction to hunt. I have recently reworded the "for one to end one must begin" as a mini brainwashig demo over a subliminal ad set. While I usually have a tarot deck in my car , a pendulum and or a key..I want to see what effects I can do if some catches me with none of this stuff. I suppose with enough bravado a deck of cards can be used, but it seems to smack of just another card trick.

I've seen performers take an excellent piece of business and reduce it to nothing and then seen the exact opposite as well... it's all in the presentation and personality of the one doing it. I can't go into too much detail, but Rick Maue does have an EXCELLENT (as in killer) piece going into one of his next projects... I believe it's the book OCCAM, that works very well (frighteningly so) under these conditions. I'll highly recomend you pick up a copy when it comes out next spring. |

In a tape by Andruzzi, he had a great effect to carry in your pocket. the coffin nail.
you show the antique nail and tell a story of a witch that was burned just out side of the small scottish town where you got the nail. and low the nail is cursed. and smoke comes from the nail. that is the paraphrased version but it gets a good response. Judge Bean |

Well, I hate to be picky ... but doesn't "impromptu" really mean without any preparation, or "props". Now, in my definition of impromptu, the items must look like something you'd carry with you all the time, so pendulums, business cards, etc., would work (even if they are prepared so the SUC will fall into this definition of impromptu.
I don't however think coffin nails ot voodoo dolls fit into this definition ... but then again, a person MIGHT have one of these items on him/her, just by chance. I wouldn't think too many weird items would look impromptu, however. Osiris' items DO, however fall completely under my definition of impromtu. What does everyone think? |

I know you are right. "why look I have four
minature skulls here? and one is black. place your hand on two of them." That does sound suspious. So yes, business cards would have to fit the bill for impromptu bizzare magic. |

As for really truly impromptu, I have done things like make it rain. It was cloudy out & I just started rubbing my hands together towards the sky & it started raining. I got a couple more people into it & we made thunder & lighting. I have also done things such as make birds come to me, I just started wiggling my index finger towards a group of humming birds & one came over to me.
The other night I was doing magic at a bar & an ashtray started moving across the table(it was wet & uneven) one person asked if I was doing it, so I started waving my hand above it & took credit for it. My ex girlfriend was a "witch". She would do all kinds of hokey stuff & if it worked, it was her witch powers that made it happen. I often pointed out to her that one thing out of fifty might work for her, she was only concerned when she had "success". If you do something that no one has any idea what you are doing & something happens, take credit for it. Bust a cloud, make it rain, whatever. In my case people expect weird things to happen when I'm around. I do usually have effects such as the haunted key, Okito doll, a cut & restored string with a story about love & life. I'm a weird guy who does weird stuff, that is how most people see me. Ichazod |

I guess in ANY sort of magic, what one can pull off believably another may not. Persona, props, and presentation need to be alligned very closely to be utterly convincing. Just my 2 cents...

Even impromptu settings can benefit from a tiny bit of advance preparation. Many of the items in the immense Martin Gardner Encyclopaedie of Impromptu Magic require the performer to have noticed a circumstance, loaded an object, or some such.
As I see it, it's still impromptu if the spectator is unaware of the preparation, and the objects used feel like they belonged where they were found. For example, you could stash the coffin nail where it will be found "accidentally" when you happen to have an audiance available. You could regularly leave sugar packets of slush powder at your "usual haunt". You can acquire a reputation for not knowing what might be in your pockets. You could simply know what actualy is around the next corner. When one of your pre-prepared moments presents itself, take credit for the miracle!

Impromptu bizarre magic:
Turn on TV, turn down volume and wave hands over screen. Command the sound to become absurd. Turn up the volume for just 5 seconds. See, it works! How bizarre do you want it?
...to all the coins I've dropped here
