I had been shredding my thumbs raw for a week trying to get the Long Distance Spinner move down, and I finally found some degree of success, so I've decided to post my (probably obvious) findings for other beginners interested in this trick. Hopefully your thumb joints will thank you.
1. Use a TT. You'll be surprised how well it works. 2. If you cannot get one of the above mentioned apparati, CLIP YOUR THUMBNAILS DOWN AS FAR AS YOU CAN GET THEM! It's almost impossible to get any friction on the card if your nail is even the slightest bit long. 3. To get a nice arc on the card, tilt the deck slightly towards you, and keep the top of the deck pointed at 10 o'clock. After a lot of practicing, you should be able to get a nice, clean arc to your other hand, no matter how high it flies. 4. Try and envision your WHOLE WRIST launching the card, even though your thumb is doing most of the work. 5. Keep a tight grip on the deck with your index and pinky, but not TOO tight. I won't say it was strictly thanks to guitar playing, but my hands were already pretty nimble when I started learning sleights. The Long Distance Spinner did not come so easy. Keep practicing, and it will suddenly click. Good luck to my fellow newbies!

I've used magician's wax before on the tip of my thumb and it seems to work pretty good.
Am I wrong again?

Hold the deck tightly to make the card being spun go out a lot easier

Try using one of those little rubber finger-tip thingies like they use at the post office. They're kind of like a condom for your thumb... very flexable and you can catch better friction.

Yes... true... a bit obvious. They do make them in "flesh tone" but it still makes it look like your thumb has a strange skin condition. Also, you mentioned using a TT and I have one of the soft rubber ones that works just as well.

The Long Distance Spinner does seem pretty hard for most people...I got it after some time. Make sure you learn how to properly hold the deck. Like someone else said, don't be afraid to squeeze the crap out of your deck! You have to get used to the feel and getting a good grip on the cards. Also, I haven't seen the video in awhile, but try using you thumb to get the cards off the deck at the TOP edge and CLOSE to your finger. Try getting as close as possible! My nails are a bit long, and I don't have any trouble doing it. Cutting your nails does help though. Good luck!

I'm missing my little finger is there any way round this as I plan to catch it in a one handed fan. 2 little fingers are required but I've only got 1.

I just now tried it using my middle finger rather than little finger, it works but it's really uncomfortable. Maybe if you used bridge sized cards it would be better.
