Does anyone perform seated these days, ala Slydini? I almost never find the opportunity to do so. Most "close-up" performances seem to have become "small platform" type shows.

I do most of my work standing.
Sometimes I get down on the ground and share. Of course if I am already seated, i.e. while eating or at a meeting I can use some of the things I learned from Slydini.(Imp pass, revolve vanish.......) Harris

In England the pub is great for sit down stuff. I always seem to be in there!

Except for the casual trick over dinner, there seems to be little opportunity for a sit down session - unless you are working the Castle close-up room.
There's a good side to this, though - unless you are Slydini, lapping fools FAR fewer people than most magicians can possibly imagine. Later....... |

That's true, but without the use of lapping, a sitting performance makes you closer to the spectators, the relationship are not the same at all.
Lapping is like TT, it is one of the first things we become aware of, but it not efficient AT ALL... ...Untill you've really worked a lot.

When the setting is appropriate... sitting is just fine. When not... not a big deal to put one's case and coat under the table and use that as a drop manager.
The issue as I understand it is one of respect for the audience. Why should the performer be seated when others have to stand in order to see the show? The chair where you drape your jacket seems to suffice for many things. Is trafic management a good topic for Secret Sessions?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I think it is. Traffic management and potential mismanagement would seem very appropriate. I know I could improve in that area!

I do all my shows seated and the audience seems to like the closeness of the performance.

So you make them stand to see you? I think that's backwards bud, I'm sorry.
Plus, if you think about it, why work so hard on stuff that is difficult to see? You are the performer and by standing, you are telling them that without words not to mention you recieve attention ANY performer deserves. You ever see Luciano Pavarotti give a concert sitting? Even people that do poetry performance stand and they don't have vision requirements like we do. They simply speak while standing. |
