Yes, let's just add to the misinformation that's already out there.

The most important thing, if you care for your mother-in-law, is to do everything you can to persuade her never to visit a "psychic" like this again. Such people are thieves who are out to steal her money as well as her emotional well-being, and it seems that this particular snake is poisoning your own life too by what she is telling your mother-in-law. Do not take this lightly. Take some positive and firm action. All the best.

Yes it is...and that's my biggest bone of contention with them. Steve

Maybe I like being the voice of reason in a world of chaos and greed.
Are you always so friendly, David? Steve

Go to the psychic, but don't let on you're related to your MIL. Record the reading, or better yet get her to record it and give you a copy, and then get a real reading (i.e lead her on to the fact that you're happily married, you're a kind person, etc.).
Then ask your mother how the psychic can be correct if she gives 2 conflicting readings. |

On another note, the longer I have been around, the more I find that you are wise to pick and choose your battles. Maybe you feel this one is for you.
On the other hand, I would weigh what the worst possible outcome might be if you somehow gave more attention to the matter versus if you ignored it. |

You've displayed a symptom of an open mind! Quick get help! I myself see Randi as someone frozen into a belief-system and not possessing an open mind. I also see most of religion and metaphysics in the same way. Still, there is more to heaven and earth than you can shake a stick at. You can only prove extra-ordinary things for yourself. Arguing about these things is kinda silly.

No, no, no. Do not try to "show up" the psychic. Your mother in law has an emotional investment in her. Give the psychic a graceful way out. She must be getting a read on another daughter, or another man of significance in her daughter's life (not you). This is a situation that requires flexibility. "Proving" the psychic to be a fraud, or to be wrong, will erode your own relationship between you and your mother in law and, ultimately, will put your wife in a very uncomfortable position between the two of you. You need finesse (and compromise) here if you wish to maintain good familial relationships. 0pus |

So what? This is a person who is convincing his MIL to interfere with his marriage. If it were me I would do all I could to TOTALLY discredit, even DESTROY this con artist. |

I could not care less about the psychic. And I believe that the psychic lacks integrity and is a danger to all she "advises."
But it is Nicholas's relationship with his MIL that needs to be carefully considered. Belief in the legitimacy of psychics has much in common with religious beliefs. Have you ever tried to dissuade a person from his or her religious beliefs with logic and science? That process would very likely irreparably damage Nicholas's relationship with the MIL. 0pus |

The relationship between him and his wife FAR out weighs the relationship with the MIL. I speak from experience.

I think we agree; Nicholas's relationship with his wife is of paramount importance.
I was assuming (perhaps erroneously) that a strained relationship with his wife's mother would adversely affect his relationship with his wife. 0pus |

That depends on the relationship that the wife has with her mother. In my case, the more my MIL interferes, the better the relationship I have with my wife gets.

I've heard hundreds of magic buffs make statements such as the one you have made. It is a dangerous assumption and to encourage someone to berate and betray someone's beliefs in an agressive manner, such as you've suggested, is simply wrong! AS I and others have stated, this is something that must be done gently and in a way that allows the "victim" to realize on their own, what may be happening. Most Psychics/Spiritualists that are out there stealing and preying upon the consumer go after specific groups based on education and income levels as well as cultural habits and related superstitions. Demographically speaking the main body of "marks" are persons of color (black & latino being most common in the states)of relatively low income and strong religious ties (keep in mind, many blacks as well as latinos are very familiar with Santerian/Voodoo traditions, mountain magic, etc. You will also find strong religious-based superstitions for those raised Catholic and Latin.) Anglos that are of low education and living in a rural region are also a target, but typically when it comes to Whites the real target are the 16-25 getting out on my own for the first time young adults as well as the 55+ in poor and failing health senior (and if their partner has passed, they are the prime target!) Of the many magicians that take the stand you have taken in your post, I have yet to meet ONE that has willingly put their life on the line investigating this kind of situation first hand. I on the other hand, have helped with stings in three different communities and exposed two different "dangerous cult" groups... the second time coming very close to losing my own life and that of my family. So please, let's not do the armchair expert thing and regurgitate the James Randi inspired position on this issue. As I've said elswhere, neither extreme holds the complete truth to the matter. That will be found in the middle ground and that's where it's safest to stand when it comes to any matter dealing with human faith, the mystery of the divine, and the power those two things can muster. |
