I have a blue and gold, that is four and a half years old. I feed him zupreme fruitblend, along with fruits and vegitables. Recently, like over the last two weeks, I noticed he was not eating very much atof his zupreme, but was eating all the purple pelets of his zupreme, but still eating fruit and veggies. Has anything similar to this ever happened to yo? What do you think is going on?
Any ideas would be great Kyle |

It is not uncommon for a bird to pick his fave color or shape and ignore the rest. I also supplement (note I said supplement, not as a main diet) Zupreem but I alternate between the fruit blend colorful pellets and the plain (brown pellets) that Zupreem makes. Since all are uniform in shape and size they tend to eat it all. Also, as long as we are discussing pellets stay away from Kaytee’s exact. It contains Ethoxiquin <SP> that is an insecticide.

Just a small amounts and just keep increasing it as time goes on.
BTW the best foods are zupreme and Harrisons. |

For pellets, I use Tropicaan Hagen Pellets. It smells like bubble gum. I like the smell on their breath when they eat it. All my parrots seem to like it except for my mollucan cockatoo. He just wants sunflower.

Jkta99,
Not true as a blanket statement. You do not want the salted ones. You also don't want to feed them only sunflowers as they won't provide the proper nutrition. If the cockatoo really likes sunflower seeds I would suggest saving them for training sessions as the reward for performing a behavior correctly. Positive reinforcement is the way to go. |

My cockatoo refuses to eat anything but sunflower. But he eats (or plays) with his fruits, veggies, pellets and bread in very small amounts. I tried removing the sunflower seeds gradually but he lost a lot of weight. This is the only problem parrot in my family. He is also the only feather chewer. He keeps on chewing his flight and tail feathers. I tried everything. I just accept him as what he is now. He is still cuddly, loving and funny. His name is Trix.

Sunflower seeds for a reward are ok but to make them the main part of a parrots diet isn't healthy. It won't kill the bird but it will shorten its life span if the sunflower seeds are a large portion of their diet.

How much attention do you give him? Are you working him at all? By that I mean dedicated training sessions. Feather plucking is not a good sign. There are many causes for it. Nutrition has been linked, Sunlight, Stress and infrequent baths.
Does he have toys? Do you leave them in the cage with him? Try leaving them in for a few hours to only a day. Then put a different toy in. It might get him focused off his own feathers. I would suggest not feeding him breads. Fruits, veggies and pellets are good. What brand pellets are you feeding him? Have you tried Pretty Bird? You also may want to try putting his treats in small cardboard boxes (like toothpaste comes in) for enrichment. It makes getting food interesting for them. Most times pulling feathers is a sign of boredom or frushtration (I know that is a bit anthropromorphic). Please keep us updated on the situation. |
