As we all know, the mental image of a coind can be seen in the mind of a spectator. Example: A retention vanish, a take vanish, Himber vanish, french drop and many more sleights. So I got to thinking...what if we s magicians could move that " mental image" of the coin? I mean "really move it" from hand to hand. Could this fantastic feat be achieved? I have been researching this for about a year now. This sounds impossible. Keep in mind we are talking strictly about the mental image of the coin being moved, not the coin itself. Could this be accomplished? I went back many many years up to today in my research to see if this has ever been achieved and my findings showed nothing.
My primary objective was this: OK, hold in your right hand, at your fingertips. Come over with your left hand grabbing the coin with your left fingertips. (cover the coin, "do not" really take it. The coin will remain hidden in your right hand). The left hand moves away about a foot and a half insinuating that it has the coin.Keep in mind the mental image of the coin is now in the mind of the spectator. Last seen at the fingertips of the right hand. OK, now, the left hand opens it's fingertips showing the complete mental image of the same coin (remember, coin is hidden in the right hand during all of this). At this point, the left hand closes then opens showing the coin has vanished. Left hand is completely emty. Only seconds before the vanish, the coin was seen at the left fingertips. The illusion that was created here was, the spectator saw the coin vanish from the very hand it was in. What we magicians have done, was to move that mental image of the coin a foot and a half with the hands away from each other, allowing the spectator to see two mental images of the coin at different times. "impossible". What was accomplished here was that we moved the mental image of the coin from one hand to the other. Also "Impossible". I have figured out a way to achieve this amazing feat. If anyone is interested in this type of magic, Please E-mail me. Is it impossible? I once thought it was and I was wrong!. " It is possible" Thanks for reading Mickey |

I don't get what you said.... and the caplocks make my eyes swore. However, I can been fooling around with something like this. If you use big silver dollars, then tend to flash in the light. So you can use this flash to blind your spectators for a second. This is great misdirection for ditching the coin. I use the flash in this way.... Retention the coin into the left but, keep the coin in the right. Finger palm the coin as you bring your left hand in front of your right. Then open both hands, flashing the coin in the right hand in the spectators eyes. At the right angle the flash looks like it comes from the right hand. I wonder if you could also do you application with a really bright ring.
Thanks, Lee BTW, Mickey you should really get a web cam. |

Just out of curiosity , and I could be completely off base here but the Goshman toss vanish is just that. By reading your post I can only gather that whilst moving the coin as you are, or at least the hand position as described you would have to be talking to them for a particular misdirectional flow to execute this mirage image to happen in their mind. With Goshmans ideology there is no misdirection their mind simply fills in the blank and they really see the coin, from their perspective. If I am misunderstanding please correct me if I am wrong.
cheers Thank you for the videos? Reed |

...WHAT IF WE AS MAGICIANS COULD MOVE THAT "MENTAL IMAGE" OF THE COIN ? and he explained it further. It is an interesting idea, but my first thought where, it is not possible the way the *effect* is described by Mikey, but saying something is impossible, is right away limiting ones mind..so one should think more about it. BUT.... I have a perfect example that similar had been done, but -of course- the hand, not containing anything, had/couldn't be opened so the spec could se an *image* of the object. The example I think of is -again- Albert Goshman.. I DID read the above posting from Reed McClintock re the Goshman toss vanish, but I had another example in mind...the Goshman spongeball toss vanish.. During his spongeball routine he does a toss-vanish from right to left, *unloads* his right by (principially) picking up another sponge, adding the one in the right and give it to a spec who closes his hand around. THEN he *backtossed* the imaginary sponge from his left to his right and after a short delay vanishes it THEREFROM! Now, I do use this sequence of moves myself-entirely stolen from Albert , I'n sure one can picture that it is very effective,as the spec can't track back, that sponge simply vanishes, looks to them like real magic..both hands are empty. I think the above is something near- but not entirely- the lines Mickey thought of, but opening the hand not containing anything and let them imaginate an image of the object that should be inside? That's a more difficult task.. BTW, the above mentioned move with a sponge can be done with a coin too, as long as one can *unload* the right hand, that supposingly passed the coin to the left in a *natural* way, and after unloading, that backtoss can be done.. Good luck in researching that visual retention subject..pls. let us know if and when you find a practical soultion..
Learn a few things well.....this life is not long enough to do everything.....
( Words of wisdom from Albert Goshman ...it paid off for him - it might as well for YOU!!!- My own magic is styled after that motto... ) |

From the audience perspective, from moment a coin goes out of sight, it's existence is that of a mental image. Most of what we call existence is not so much direct observation as a mental image we check against what we can observe at the moment.
How one confirms the accuracy of their mental image is a matter of style and technique. Getting back to coins, Downs used sound with his rattle gimmick. Other folks have used other methods. Mickey has a very effective way to show his 'image' of the coin in his hand, and probably elsewhere too
...to all the coins I've dropped here

RE: "With Goshmans ideology there is no misdirection their mind simply fills in the blank and they really see the coin, from their perspective."
I don't see why the same couldn't hold true in the context of a retention vanish. It's a very similar movement, albeit slower and more "in focus" and deliberate than the goshman move leading into the Toss Vanish. It would seem to make sense that if the "flash" of an image remains in the mind of the spectator for a millisecond or 2, then logically, an image burned in for a little longer should last a little longer... shouldn't it? Almost like those kids puzzles where you stare at a green, black, and yellow flag for a 60 seconds, then look at a white piece of paper and see a red, white, & blue flag... a reverse image of the original, which has been burned into your retinas. Ok, granted, a retention vanish is a lot different than staring intently at a reversed flag, but the principle may be similar in some ways, yes? Best (leave the science to Mickey and wait for the DVD ), Mike |

Mike,
That idea of yours could certainly work, I think. This is purely theoretical, but if you draw a lot of attention to the coin beforehand - such as "I want you to really watch the coin" - and then perform the most convinving ROV or false transfer that you have. At that point, perhaps reprimand them a bit for not watching, and open your hand with the supposed coin in it to give them a brief glimpse - and tell them to watch it really closely. You could then proceed with the vanish. The only possible drawback is, when you yell at them for not watching the coin they might actually see that the coin has vanished, and interpret your yelling at them as a way of telling them that the coin has vanished...if that makes sense. The ideas about a ring that someone mentioned earlier (using it as a flash) is good, but then some could backtrack and realize that the flash was caused by the ring. Mickey's work on this seems promising. Zach I just posted an idea on this in the Secret Sessions forum...I'd just post it here, as it is rather brief, but I'm not sure whether it would be considered exposure, so you can go there for it. Zach PS - This is post number 400 for me.

Plus its probably one of the best DVD's I have ever seen....FUNNY STUFF....And CLASS A magic... |

Using a camera to watch the spectators is a great idea and a great research tool.
One of the things that struck me positively about the first Blaine T.V. Special, was that the camera captured the spectators. When on stage or in the creative process, I try to visualize what the spectator sees. Of course the spectator(s) usually create more than what we provide and share based on their own background, state of mind ...... Be safe and creative. Thank to Coin Café'rs for helping me in raising the bar on coin magic. Harris

I use something along these lines with my coin in bottle routine.
Bottle held by neck in left hand - coin at fingertips in right. Tap the base of the bottle with the coin lean forward and extend your left hand to show the base of the bottle and at the same time bring your right hand back. and again - Tap the base of the bottle with the coin lean forward and extend your left hand to show the base of the bottle and at the same time bring your right hand back - as you do so toppit the coin whilst keeping your fingers in the holding the coin position. Slap the bottom of the bottle with your right hand to do the penetration and immediatly show you right hand empty. Paula
