I am thinking about adding some music to my performances, and was wondering which royalty free music cd's other performers are using? What ones do you like best, and why?

Thanks,

I've used in the past the Bill White, Ultimate Magic cd. It's sort of a greatest hits of Bill White. On the cd it lists http://www.purelymagic.com/billwhite as his web address but that doesn't seem to work. You can find his stuff on Murphy's website at http://www.murphysmagicsupplies.com

Bruce, - for houseparties, in fact for all PRIVATE parties, as opposed to public performances, - are they not 'royalty free' in any case? Here in Britain this comes under the auspices of The Performing Rights Society, to which you pay an annual fee. However, as mentioned I doubt the PRS has any control in theory over private functions. If you go and entertain in an Arcade or similar PUBLIC situation I'd advise anyone to check their legal responsibilities over music tracks used however. Even if you perform live music you are in theory supposed to pay towards the publishers, composers (composers descendants) rights of ownership. To get this into perspective though, the music industry loses millions of dollars each year over illegal downloading, copying etc. Do you reckon they'd even care about a children's entertainer using a legitimately paid for CD or Tape in their act?

For children's magic, definitely check out the Arthur Stead CD. It was written especially for children's enttertainers! I only own his first CD, but I have heard great things about the others. You can check them out here: http://www.arthurstead.com/

There is some good music for magicians out there that is worth checking out. I would also recommend that you research royalty-free music that is not geared just for magicians. There are many companies out there that sell cds full of music of all varieties that is sold primarily for commercials, documentaries and for performers. Many of these companies allow you to preview the music to make sure it is exactly what you want.

I have found some good music this way and I prefer it to being limited to what someone thinks is "music for magicians" versus music that is perfect for my act and the particular mood I want to convey.

There are quite a few threads on this subject already in the "Little Darlings" area and also in the "F/X" area of the Café.

Seek those out for more links and ideas.
