Getting ready to start glass walking, with tips from our own Dr. Wilson. Have done fire eating. What other Geek stuff is out there? Whose done what? Who thinks some stuff is just too dangerous to try...(I keep looking at that light bulb, but ***ed if I am going to eat the thing!!)
Where are you guys and gals doing this stuff? And how does it go over? "For it shows things that were, and things that are, and things that yet may be. But which it that he sees, even the wisest cannot always tell" ~Galadriel "A heretic is a man who sees with his own eyes." |

I've actually done firewalking several times, but not as a performance piece - FAR too much work to set up.
I'm contemplating pounding nails into my face. That's probably about it. If you want to see the gamut, prepare your stomach and check out my nephew's site - http://www.georgethegiant.com I love that he can gross out my sisters. Revenge is sweet.

If the glass is flat and not poking up you can walk on it. Also the adrenaline of a performance covers up the minor pain of jamming needles through various parts of your body.. I've done the one where you sew fruit to your chest, as well as sewing through the back of my hand. Just be sanitary. Also, you can get sterilized sharp needles from medical supply.

Isn't bed of nails a heavy PIA piece to tote about?

Check out some of the stunts(?) performed by the traveling Shoalin monks from China. There are also books called "Skills of the Vagabonds" and "Secrets of the Incredibles" that have some obscure and reletively safe feats of astonishment. Martial Arts stores sometimes carry them. I think the author is Dr. Leung Ting?

Todd Robbins, one of the very few masters of the old carnival routines still alive, teaches a school for people interested in learning the techniques.
Check it out at: http://www.coneyisland.com/sideshow_school.shtml You will have to email him for information on the sessions for next year. I know Todd. This stuff can be really dangerous. Don't try to learn it from a book (like Swami/Mantra). You really need to learn it from an expert, someone who does it.

No one ever criticized your performance. I simply found two things objectionable to your initial post. One was what I felt was an incorrect usage of the word "geek." We have discussed that to death. All of us have made our positions known. The other was that you posted it in the wrong place, i.e. the bizarre section. Perhaps I jumped the gun in assuming that because you apparently did not know the distinctions between these sections of our art, and that you were asking for, basically, entry level info, that you needed to be informed of the errors.
And you overreacted to it. Regarding the flexibility of the language -- I realize how flexible it is. I work with it and in it on a daily basis. And I deplore the use of linguistic terms for physical characteristics, even though they have apparently become as tightly ingrained into our speech and our writing as any other common misuse. And as far as any of my indentations, I have found only a couple. The main one is my navel. If you are interested in Swami/Mantra, the offer is serious and still good. It is the written source.

As stated I do have a copy, but as I understand it it is rife with bad info, but a great collector piece, unless I am thinking of another book. and it was "intended" not "indented" I may have missed the spelling on one but not all. And yes I did pull a faux pas and droped this in teh wrong thread. One thing I'll NEVEr admit to is perfection, nor capable or fluent typing, esp when my emotions are high, apologies were extended for misunderstandings on my part once again. So, is the item you are referring to the manuscript of carny stunts, like human radio, molten lead dip, sword ladder? Nice colleccters piece and like I said I have one, for posterity, but I understand it is horribly inacurate and down right dangerious if taken seriously to use as a source.
I don't think a true carny show has been close to my area for decades, thus hard to find teachers. But Like Todd, I'd hate to see it die off. Hence why I am asking people to share what they do know. I really don't want to fight about it esp about sematics. :bat: "For it shows things that were, and things that are, and things that yet may be. I meant my original comments as a way to let you know that your best chances of getting a proper teacher in the know was not to associate what we do as pros with geeks.
I hope you did notice that I mentioned that I teach all the original arts in my home, at no cost to mature people with the right attitude We provide food and lodging at no cost as well. You can choose to help with expenses, setting your own parameters. I am a long time promoter of saving the arts and the history of the sideshow and parallel arts. Slim Price

Thank you very much for the very kind offer. I hope to be able to take advantage it. Al I was trying to do was start a thread to discuss this topic, all I ask is that you admit for people who did NOT grow up in a carney background will by the above stated sources come to learn that those types of stunts fall under the name of geek magic. and that when used as such most people do not mean the term geek as it applies in the negative sense (kind of like how African Americans can refer to themselves as a name, and gays cab call themselves something, but no one else can. Your initial response could have been read as inflammatory and condescending since as discussed nuance is lost in written word, maybe it would have been better stated as "I have been involved in sideshow work for X tears and while others have applied geek as a term to this type of performance it is really not the proper standard. Again if you did not mean your post to come off as a dressing down to a punk, then I again apologize for taking it as such, especially if you admit it, while not meant as such could have been taken as a dressing down. Basically I feel there is fault on both sides of this misunderstanding and all I wanted was a mutual apology from all parties with no hard feelings...is that really to much to ask for? Please understand all this has been said with the utmost sincerity and respect all three of us erred and made statements that could have been misunderstood, can you do the same? Thank you and again, if circumstance allows I'd LOVE to learn this stuff properly so I don't kill myself, regardless of what was said I do understand even done right this stuff is dangerous as hell, and can't be learned from a book. You really do seem like a great guy Slim, and ha this not erupted I hope we can restart on a new fresh foot. My hand is out to you and Bill with my own Olive branch. I hope we can settle this better then we started it

I would hope that part of the message of magic and sideshow that we impart is that labels are not all that important.
In the end we are all unique individuals, freaks in our own right. That means we are not seeking conformity but letting the magic of who we are shine through. We can look beyond this mortal flesh and connect with the true person. Every person is a magical being. And yes, I would be proud to be called a geek as well. I heard a great quote from a sideshow performer - Freak is not a deragotory term. Being called a freak is the highest compliment you could give me.

My problem seems to be one of generation. I was reared with the idea that language should be accurate. The more it's diluted, the more difficult it is to clearly impart information.

I do glass-walking, and really just about anyone who has seen me do it was in total awe from it. Sometimes I get small cuts from little pieces of glass and blood trinkles on various places giving it the extra kick to the act.

I have just done little here and there "performances" I guess you would call them at peoples house...just friends. Haven't ever really look for a real "gig" yet. Still perfecting what I know...and since I am just 14, it will be kinda hard to find a gig. I am just gonna keep it kinda simple for right now.
