Speaking strictly as an amateur who only occasionally trots out a mentalism effect, I'd have to say the following have been of the most use to me, in no particular order:

Theodore Annemann's Practical Mental Magic
Karl Fulves' Self-Working Mental Magic
Max Maven's Prism

I also consider Corinda's 13 Steps to be essential, if only to provide a historical base.
