Hi,
This is my first post here as I never realy liked the idea of it, because untill now. I have been asked a few times now do Ihave a christian act for kids, Usually when people ask for requests I usually say yes and I worry about it later. But ive always said no I don't do that. so now I'm thinking of creating a show aimed for churches and sunday schools. Apart from the obvious stuff like bible colouring books what else works well and to what patter? Thanks Matt |

This may sound like a silly question, but needs to be asked.
Are you a believer? I mean, please, please, please don't just take a gospel show for the money. Make sure that you are comfortable sharing your faith, and that this is something you felt lead by God to do. I was a professional entertainer for many years, and also a Christian for many years, before I started doing gospel shows. I was comfortable sharing my faith, and comfortable doing shows. However, I was not comfortable combining the two. I didn't want to do a poor job of combining the two, and be a poor reflection on the quality of my God. I practiced and practiced until I was comfortable doing the two together, and doing a professional job. Then I started accepting bookings for gospel shows. When I went to a regional FCM convention several years ago, I was quite disappointed at the number of performers who didn't do quality acts. They were unpracticed, and methods were revealed by their lack of skill. It is important to be a good magician and a good entertainer, and a good orator. You are speaking about God. He cares about quality, craftsmanship and detail. If you don't believe me, look up the passages that discuss how the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle was to be made. - Donald.

First, bit of encouragement, have you asked God about it? Does He have a plan for your show? Is He teaching you something that you want to share with others? The advise or "counsel" I would give you is to pick a biblical topic - perhaps something that you have heard a preacher give a message on, or something that you yourself have recently read from Scripture - and "build" your show around that theme or idea. There are many, many topics, themes, accounts(stories), ideas etc. that can be used from God's Word. Also, one of the tremendous things about this particular area of the Café is that there are many folks willing to share gospel applications for secular effects. You can scroll through the different topics posted in this area and get some great inspiration. Please keep us posted as to how the show works out for you. peace, phill

I am a believer. Im not doing it for the money as most of them were charity work and I do quite a lot of charity work. Its because I love doing kids shows and I think this would be a new and exiting show to venture into.

Donald, it wasn't a silly question. I had the same reaction when I first read Matt's post.
Matt, I agree with both Donald and Phill on this one. My best piece of advice is to pray. Ask God for guidance so that you can zero in on what message you want to get across. It's great that you want to spread the Gospel, but I think that it's important to know WHAT you want to spread specifically. I'm still struggling with this very issue. I've been talking to various youth pastors and directors of children's ministry to really refine my goal. Going into Gospel Magic isn't just putting a show together. You really want to first be an example of what you teach. Before you teach children to treat each other equally, you've got to do the same. You're not just a magician, you're a role model for everybody you preach to. On that note, before we can help you to form a show, we've got to know your goal. You mentioned the Christian Coloring Book. Personally, I'm not a fan of this. It's just magic in the guise of a Christian presentation. There's no message or lesson being taught with it. Unless you use it as an opener (ala Duane Laflin's advice of explaining the difference between magic and miracles), I would push that prop aside for the time being. Good luck in your ministry, Andy |

I have used the Bible Coloring Book to get across a good message, IMHO.
I say that if we never pick up our real Bible, open it and read it, well, the pages might as well be blank. (Show the pages blank) If we read the Bible once in a while, and go to Church once in a while, and don't listen, pray and really try to learn about the Word Of God, then we are just getting a general outline, and will never fully understand God's wonderful plan. (Show the black and white pictures) On the other hand, if we will read our Bible and go to Church regularly, and listen to our preacher and Sunday School teachers, and always seek God's guidance through prayer, then He will open up our understanding, and we will get a beautiful, clear picture of God's Word. (Show the pages in color) It will be more vivid and exciting than we ever thought possible. There are many possibilities you can use to bring about the magical change. The pictures in the Bible Coloring Book can also lead into a discussion about Jesus or a coresponding Biblical lesson. I'm not a huge fan of the magic coloring book, but I think it can bring across a nice message in this application. Regan

That is a good application for the coloring book Regan.
I think Donald's question was very applicable. I would not want a non Christian preaching to my children or me and I have no doubt most Christians would feel that way. Your heart must be in the right place. It would be better to pass the job to someone who is trying to do the Lord's work. God Bless

Thanks Daniel.
I totally agree that your heart really does need to be in the right place to to Gospel magic. The life you live speaks volumes to the people that would be interested in hiring you to do a Gospel magic show. I also sing and write a lot of my own songs. Churches would not want me in their church singing Gospel songs if I didn't the right kind of life. I think it is the same way with magic. Regan

I have the Bible coloring book from Doc Haley. It came with two very good routines. The one I like the best is by Steve Taylor. The theme is read the Bible once and you remember very little. Read it over and over and it comes alive.
I begin by asking if anyone reads their Bible daily. ChrisG

Very nice routine Reagan, I am heading to the magic trunk in the basement to dig out the coloring book.
Thanks for sharing with us. Jim |

You're welcome Jim.
We are supposed to share the Gospel. Besides, I know I got ideas for the routine from other places through the years and just adapted the patter somewhat, so it really isn't mine anyway. We need to do all we can to motivate our youth and get them interested in learning about Jesus Christ. Magic is a wonderful teaching "tool". Perhaps, the best there is. We live in a world where our youths are learning many bad messages from the wrong sources, so let's do all we can to teach them right whenever we can. They need positive role models to set the right kind of examples and live the right kind of life in front of them. Regan

We must be reading similar material, because my patter is almost identical to yours! I prefer to use the "Holy Bible" version (the one with white letters on a black cover) of the colouring book over the other one. It fits with that patter better. By the way, here is a tip to end the colouring book routine. In the Dale Carnegie Course, we learned to end our motivational / inspirational talks with an "Action-Benefit" Statement. This will help make your message more concrete, and make them take action on it. An "Action-Benefit" Statement is to influence the audience to action. Don't just tell them what you want to do, though, also give them the benefit of taking that action. So I apply this to many of my gospel routines. So, how I finish the colouring book, after all the other patter, is to state, "So, what I recommend to you, is that you read your Bible, and learn what God is saying to you." (ACTION) "Then, you will have a happier, more colour-filled, abundant life!" (BENEFIT) - Donald.

Good ending Donald.
Action-Benefit statements are agood idea. I like it when a kid (or sometimes an adult) comes to me long after a show and asks me about something I did. Sometimes it may be from a show that I did years ago, yet they remember lots of details. When this happens it makes me feel like I did something that caused it to stick in their memories, and that is worth a lot. Regan
