I have been looking at the the magic vs. entertainment thread in Food for Thought. It is about emotional mentalism, but it seems to be wandering all over the place because it doesn't give any examples.
My idea of an example is doing a cold reading and making a guess about a personal detail, i.e, who is Mary? What is this sudden change in your love life on your Heart Line? A hit like this can produce a deep effect/amazement. I have done the Quick and the Dead, but I always tell them not to write down the name of somebody dead who was close to them. That could be too emotional for me anyhow. (Reg Rozee has just sent me a very cunning working of Quick and the Dead.) What is your favourite 'Emotional Mentalist Effect'? Cheers. TJ |

There are many ways of invoking emotions via Mentalism. My favorite bits include the story I tell when presenting Lee Earle's MUSE BOX (never fails to get the audience to shed a few tears) and too, how I handle PK Touches.
Mentalism thrives on emotional investment as well as the "theatrical" investment of "belief". When you gain that investment, much the way ET originally captured everyone's heart or how Disney made us cry when that old yellow dog had to be shot, well, that's when you know you're doing your job right. Truth be known, this is something bizarrists need to become more aware of and discover how to use it to their advantage as performers. Mentalism is a field in which we, as entertainers, deliberately reach into the minds of those gather about. It is quite literally "sleight of mind" and for that reason we owe it to ourselves as well as our audiences, to become masters of words and emotion. Communicators who are aware of everything we do and what, psychologically speaking, our tone, cadence and tale do within the mind of the average participant. Those who are good at this kind of control can make a quick believer out of the non-believers and skeptics alike. If you doubt me, check out the next tent revival show that comes to town, hosted by an old time fire-and-brimstone preacher. These guys have the "act" down pat when it comes to eliciting the emotions of fear and guilt. Of course, the same can be said for Political Conventions, Pep Rallies for sports teams, etc. Interesting concept. It is worthy of discussion. Thanks! |

If you've got good acting chops, check out Greg Arce's e-book for a devastating piece of emotional mentalism.
