The difference between the reactions between people in the audience just watching and people on the stage is often very big.
I have a lot of material from Becker, Cassidy, Osterlind... But I'm not sure what tricks in their books that are letting the entire audience get involved. Can you give me some examples? hjelm Sweden |

Q&A involves the entire audience and works on many more levels than a normal 'effect'. See Osterlind do it on his DVD's if you want to see 'what it looks like' Even non-participants get involved as they watch the reactions of those chosen, and as you can pick people from different areas of the audience you can have the impact covered.

Dear Mr Helmut,
First, you should start off with something that involves everybody, like with a psychological force (Cassidy has some great ideas here). Why not a newspaper prediction, letting everybody get a copy of todays paper? After that, I would propose Q & A... or, why not a bending effect where everybody concentrate to bend something? Cassidy also have something where everybody writes on slips of papers to create a story.. one third is writing murder weapons, one third is writing the murderers appearance, and one third something else (my memory isn't totally clear here). This is in Cassidy Complete principia I guess. Or, Banacheks design duplication envolves everybody into the process.. Or, may I suggest Some Radio Total, The Osterlind way... Also, try to keep your helpers in the audience, like in the radar deck (Osterlind). The fact that the person "things happens to" is not on stage, but within the audience, also strengthen the feeling among the entire audience. Regards from Jonkoping, Sweden, Europe, Earth |

Those are great ideas. Any more? Appealing to everyone is a big challenge in mentalism!

I think there is one more important thing. For sure, I know Mr Hjelm personally, a good friend of mine (I hope), so I know what he is after. But, for the others, I think in a broader perspective there is so much else than just the effect that must engage every single spectator in the audience... they ALL have to laugh, or imagine how you felt when you left your body, or feel a creepy feeling when doing Banacheks psychological touches (what is the exact name?)

If you are using Banachek's PK Touches, and you don't know the name of it, simply look at the front of your manuscript to find out.
As for full audience. What about psychological forcing, always goes down well and can nicely follow on to an effect. Colin

Colin, my dear friend: One characteristic of the new worlds communication feature called Internet, is that it is accessable, at least in the civilized part of the world, from almost everywhere. So, sitting at work and not finding the title of manuscript that are at home, not having time to search the net for it... is actually possible. Even if the name wasnt totally correct, I guess that answer could have some input into the question asked by mr hjelm, and to the other readers? And, I never said that I use it. I only know about it.
I cant understand this type of "smart-ass comment". You wanted to tell the correct name? Fine! do it. That makes the discussion live. Well... now, for the rest of your reply... Psychological forces has already being spoken about here (actually by my first post here)... So, what did you REALLY add to this discussion when it comes to an end? You just felt like writing on a board? I guess there are chats for that. To add something new to the discussion, since its that I think that a forum is all about, I will add the tip of the routine "Murder in the writing" by shrink, using invisible pad. /H |

The PK Touches comment was intended as tongue-in-cheek, for along with sensible comments on a board, which I thought I was giving without realising you had posted, I think it is also worthy of keeping the place enjoyable and something of a ‘laugh’.
I would have thought instead of posting a long winded comment, revealing how belittling you think you can be, wouldn't it just have been easier to have a nice chat with Mr. Google? Ah well, I forgive you! Another full audience routine could be something like Larry Becker's Sum Total. First any audience member can shout out a number and then you could have everyone take out their mobile phone and add up the numbers. Simple and includes everyone. Best wishes, Colin Mcleod

Ha, ha...I Hope you don't mind if I use that some time symbolicthought.
To add some thoughts. These were probably already implied, but I know Richard Osterlind has superb thinking on the handlings of several of his effects that make them killer routines. He is able to involve the audience a bit more by using his participants. When he has a spectator on stage, he will use their reaction to increase the reaction of the audience. Simple showing the prediction can be a single punch effect. Slowly showing the spectator, then allowing the audience to read the expressions of the spectators, before the reveal can be the uppercut or elbow that finishes the effect and gets more out of the same effect. Wow, even I'm confused. |

Yea every routine I do I always ask myself How can I actively get the whole audience involved. One thing I started using recently was that before I did my CT routine/ name revelation which ever method you use. I would get everyone in the audience to think of a name then choose one at random by throwing a brick into the audience. (okay not a brick but still, I have yet to see a mentalist do this!)
I found that just the act of everyone thinking a name almost doubled the impact because the whole audience felt like they could also have their mind read (or maybe I was deluding myself and they were just being polite!) |

The only qualm I have in using psychological forces (particularly as an opener) is that it seems to me you are giving your audience both the effect and the method at the same time (especially if you ask for a 'show of hands'). Something else worth considering is that a number of these forces are 'doing the rounds' in email forwards these days. The last thing you want to do for your opener is to remind your audience of an email they read a couple of days ago.
I suggest only using these forces to add texture to an effect, not as an effect in and of themselves. Conversely (and contradictorily), take a look at Bernstein's "The Opener" in 'Perception is Everything'. He has a great take on using psychological forces on the entire audience that is both fascinating and helps to eliminate the common, 'I guess everyone must say that,' response.

Thanks a lot for helping! Does anyone remember anything from Cassidy?

The Cassidy CD-ROM collection includes a video clip of him performing on a talk show. He opens with the old "Look out your window, what do you see?" bit, and it plays beautifully. Not only is the audience stunned, but he also gets a couple amazed callers on the air (out of the many who had been calling in to say they received his thoughts too).
(Tangent: the CD is a great buy, full of the best of Cassidy's material. It's got the Art of Mentalism 2, Pseudomentally Yours, and the four Principia Mentalia books -- all of which are out of print and would cost you many times the price of the CD if you tracked them down. I think you can still get it from lybrary.com.)
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.
