THIS and THAT are not the same. THIS (Improved) is not the THIS we sold in the 70s.

I used THIS in the 70s and even into the 90s.

THAT is a look-alike but actually different for several reasons.

THIS (Improved) is the current one that solved many of the problems of the others. Those changes are discussed somewhere here on The Café.

As near as I can determine, THIS is a very old trick dating back to at least 1432. Then it was done with napkins and wine. Technology is actually what killed it until the (Improved) THIS came out since 2000. (We over came the problems of inferior new technology of the 60s and 70s!)

Dynamike,

Great work! Are you with the FBI?

One of the nicest things about the (Improved) THIS is that the load is also self-leveling. (Before it could twist on you.) Since the load can be up to about 8 pounds now, that can be very important. The load space is about the size of a half gallon milk carton.

Another change is that now you can get any three colors you want. Originally it only came with a red, blue and gold silk. Now you can even have white, if you want it!

It does not have to be the opening effect either!

I use it in my shows and silk lectures. Don't leave home without it!

Thank you, Dynamike. Rick Ruhl shot that. Maybe he used a "young" camera! The subject is definitely an antique. (Post production make you wonder how old David Blaine really is!) Look what it did for Willie Nelson.

In Rick's video it looks like the 24" Line of Silks was used. It takes about the space of two packs of cigarettes but gives you a 44' production showing over 112 square feet of silk. (Remember that audiences don't see 3D. They see surfaces.) The production is the same area as 3.5 sheets of 4'x8' plywood! There is plenty of load space left.

Rick and I will be shooting my Silk and Eggs DVD in about a week. Like the THIS (Improved) it is a series of routines that you can fly with in your carry on luggage. Remember there are only two kinds of luggage: carry on and LOST! (Ask my friend Pavel.)

Looking forward to catching you at a lecture.

Bob,
Do you think that THIS could be used to produce a Nutcracker? I am still working with my friend in the Nutcracker production I referenced in another thread, and was thinking that THIS may be a good way to produce it. Thanks!

Allen,

Here you are again!

If we are calling a nutcracker the wooden man in the military garb the answer is CERTAINLY!

You may have to remove his square base and have some other way to make him stand when produced. He also needs to only be a little over a foot tall. Otherwise, with his arms down (so they don't hang on things) it should be a piece of cake. You might even want to put hard candies at the bottom of the load to help give weight while producing the soldier and then pass them out later.

Alternative: Load the Nutcracker upside down!

Scheme!

Thanks for the terrific response yet again Bob! My next question is where can I find the silks on the line that you produce in the demo video of your site? I just got through showing my friend the demo of THIS, and he thinks that producing these silks might be a good idea as well. The nutcracker is about 14" tall. Do you think that this would fit without removing the base? Thanks again!

The silks are imported and distributed by my company (DoveLite Silk). The Demo you watched was furnished by SilkMagic.Biz which is a retailer of DoveLite and other magic props.

To me, the Line of Silks is one of the most versatile production items you can have. It is sixteen pure silks on a ribbon. There are four sizes available: 24", 18", 12" and 9". The one in the demo is a 24" and is for a 44' stage. The most popular size is the 18" (like Rob Evans uses) and it is for a 36' stage. The 12" size is for about a 24' stage and was the only size available for years. The 9" size is for things like indoor birthday parties, etc. where the room is about 14'. All are unbelievably small in storage. The space needed is from about the space of a deck of cards up to the space for two packs of cigarettes. I don't leave home without them! This is a production that fits many audiences including those that can't hear or speak the language. As pointed out in Rob's show, they allow you to very effectively use the whole stage. (And when brought back to you offer an excellent opportunity to produce a body load.)

I don't see the nutcracker's height as a problem. The main thing I would look at on the base is sharp edges that might hang.

To me, Bob Read's Bottle Production is much superior to Richard Griffin's Ultimate Bottle Production.

Wizard Magic Review actually liked the Richard Griffin bottle production quite a lot (99% from David Penn!) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgVgOOgXf1Q but I must say I agree with what someone else posted in the comments: "It looks exactly like what it is".
It was pointed out that a problem with the handling (as seen in Richard Griffin's demo video) is that the performer's left hand holding the left corner of the scarf is kept stationary (as if holding on to something) while the right hand holding the other corner of the scarf moves very freely. To not telegraph the method both hands need to mirror one another exactly in position and movement. The free (right) hand can't be flapping around like that without calling attention to the stationary left hand. I think the principle of using the sheer white scarf to mask the bl _ _ k a _ t has great potential, but the handling was not always convincing to me.
