Hi,
With all the knowledge I've amassed over the last few months as I venture into learning Stage Magic I find that there are very few illusions that totally baffle me. The one that has me going absolutely ****ing nuts is CopperfieldS MOTORCYCLE TO GIRLS. I just cant figure it out! Pm a clue! What has you going Bananas ? MaCgyver |

That is because that illusion (like many of Copperfield's) uses principles other than the half dozen most common methods in stage magic, which are used over and over and over and over...
More magicians need to think outside the box and beyond thick bases, swords, and blades. Reza |

I guess I risk a laugh or two but the trick (I've only seen it once on TV) where Roy crawls THRU Sigfried's body as Sig is between two thin pillars. I forget the name of it but it stunned me and I never tried or wanted to find a solution because I want to see it again and not know the 'how'.
As to Copperfield's 'Flying', we all know the how. But not the HOW! That was a world beater in beauty and execution. Doug

Few illusions still puzzle me, and leave me amazed. My question to the posters above is, Which part of DCs flying puzzled you the most? I love most of DCs illusions, but his flying really disapoints me. The first time I saw it, I didn't like it. Don't get me wrong, I don't have an ego or anything. Hey even some of the cheapey stuff at the magic shop baffles me! I think we all have different perspectives on things, and some of us see some things easier than others.

David Copperfield's flying to me isn't just the illusion. It's the story that he's trying to accomplish and when he does it jsut seems that real magic is actually happening! I always enjoyed the crystal box of his and how he could fly effortlessly around the stage. To me it was the best levitation ever done. That's just my opinion though!

HarbinJr. is right on the money. Copperfield's Flying- courtesy of John Gaughan (and a LOT of other people) is little more than an evolutionary step (OK, a big one) from an old Foy routine. Showmanship, timing, staging, all are classic Copperfield. Some of us could duplicate the mechanism- few the magic.
Can DC pick & choose venue? Yep. Would you or I if we could? Yep. Flying may be overblown... but you can't prove it by the public.

Flying has been a theatrical staple, well, forever. Even in Peter Pan, flying all over the freakin' stage and in the wings and OUTSIDE and into the trees with all the terrific choreography, it was a wonder. It was Magic. It wasn't the freakin' trick or the wires or the guy pulling the rig. It was the magic of it all coming together. If you don't get 'that', you don't get 'it'. Of course he was hanging in a rig. That's not puzzling to a cross eyed chicken. It's the how it was all brought together and the ultimate execution. Somethings are just masterful.

Remember when Copperfield would open his show with the Elevator up in the air? That killed, and continues to kill me every time I see it. I know that I could find out in a matter of 30 seconds how it's done, I don't care to. To me that is STILL magical.
Someday I hope to do that illusion, until then, I'll continue to believe it's real magic! Keith

I am still fried when Greg Frewin changes the birdcage into his wife at the end of his bird act.
I saw him do it live on his cruise ship last night, 10' away from him, and still haven't a clue. I mean, I have an inkling, but still am not 100%. He brings it forward (away from the table, etc.), stands on one foot, doesn't look like he is struggling, etc. I know how the vanishing birdcage works, I just don't get how he does the rest. Brilliant! Just so you know I am not as dumb as a bag of hammers, I do understand how Copperfield did the Vanishing Statue of Liberty, Walking Through The Great Wall, Vanishing a Train Car, and also most illusions like Asrah, Mismade, Origami, Interlude, Mini Cube Zag, Zaney Blaney's Ladder Suspension, Gamolo Levitation, Copperfield's Flying, Water Fountain Suspension, etc. - Donald.

That is what makes his magic real magic. Cause we haver no clue. I think we should keep it that way. Cause it keeps us woundering to. And that is real magic when you can fool laymen and magicians all togeather.

I have to say that when I first saw the Hammners do there disembodied I was fried bad. I still don't have a 100% Know of what's going on as Dave is very protective of it. I must say that it is one of the nicest tricks I ever seen.

MacGyver,
Being brutally frank, I don't think a real magician is ever going to give you the answer you seek. Real magicians have a respect for grand illusion that you don’t appear to be ready to acknowledge. Anyone can buy a scalpel and bandages. It will not make him a surgeon. Perhaps it is better to keep it from their hands until it’s time. Some of my younger days were spent playing guitar and working in recording studios. As a senior citizen now, I still believe that stealing Santana’s guitar would not improve my ability one bit. It’s not the guitar. And it’s not the props. I wish you could have seen first hand what Tony Slydini could do with paper napkins and even nothing. It was real magic. Grow! Bob Magic By Sander |

I agree with Bob that knowing a secret doesn't make someone a magician. A good magician can't just do tricks or illusions for his or her audience. A good magician has to connect with his or her audience. The best magicians are the ones the audience truly likes and relates to.
With that said, I believe Bob and I have gone off topic here. Copperfield's motorcycle to girls blew me away too! |

I would agree with remarks on Copperfield's Flying. I understand there are several different methods at work with that whole routine. More amazing to me is... How does he make all of his equipment fit back into those four semi- trucks he tours around with? I guess we will never know!
Girls to Motorcycle leaves me speechless as well! Magically, Bryan Gilles-Gilles Galaxies Magical Productions |

It may not be a grand illusion, but every time I see Johnny Ace Plamer do the coin "falling up", I get a chill. I know what the M***** P*** is but can not get it.
The big cat illusions also impress me. Not necessarily the method, but how do you get the cats to pack small and play big? Puzzling.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.
