How do members respond when kids come up after the show and call you a 'silly magician'? I don't mean kids who say it in a friendly way, but those who seem to be malicious...
My response would be to use a throwaway line like "Yes I get paid to be silly...you can be silly for nothing!' But I know sometimes that isn't too politically correct. Do other members have other ways of dealing with this? I'd love to know... |

I love it when I get called silly, I just say, 'Oh thank you, that's a compliment in my job' It's even better if it's during the show itself.

I make a funny face which I can't describe. It sort of makes me look sad and "silly". I exclaim "I'm not silly". This makes me look even sillier and the kids always laugh.

I just say, Thank you, of course I am, that's what I'm being paid to be, I must be doing it right then.
Yours Funfully

Thanks to all the members who replied to my post. I guess this is a universal 'compliment' not restricted just to Hong Kong! No wonder David Kaye marketed the name!

A number of years ago, a seven year old girl approched me after a Christmass show and told me that I was a very silly man. I asked her if that was good. Oh yes, she exclaimed, it's wonderful. I thanked her and told her it is good to know that I did not waste the money spent in going to silly school. I consider that to be the best compliment I have ever had.

I often get the "You're silly!"
"No I'm not! I'm Tom." "Yes you are! You're silly!" "No, I'm not! I'm Tom! Silly is my sister's name!" Best I ever got: "You're the strangest adult I've ever seen!" |

How do you sense they are being malicious Bern? Are we talking about older kids here who are accusing you of lack of substance in your act and trying to bring you down? I understand the reply you say you sometimes give, but it's a very fine line you know.
I personally take this as an absolute compliment from a younger child |

Aceparties, thanks for the very interesting question...I guess I don't know for certain whether they're being malicious but it's just in the tone and the body language. And you're right; it's coming from older kids (8 -10 yr olds) who seem to resent being 'fooled' by magic. Although I usually slant my tricks to suit them (adapting adult type magic with kids presentation), I think it's a peer thing...one starts and then a few others follow. I don't think its the substance of my act, but I remember Bob Markwood saying in one of his books that perhaps the kids are telling you something you don't want to hear about your act...
You have given me food for thought aceparties and I thank you. Maybe other members can give their views on how effective they have found magic to be for this age group (8-12 yrs). Before some members say simply not to take these shows, I believes that all kids should not be deprived of being entertained by the right kind of magic. I don't get such comments a lot, but it still bothers me when it happens as I don't feel I'm doing my job right! |

HI, This is a fine line as what you consider an adult trick with a kids presentation to a 8 - 12 year old they might consider it a trick with Kiddie presentation. 8- 12 s do not mind being fooled but do not like being treated as younger than they are (Think they are) I am not saying this is the case with your show ... just that it is a question to ask your self Phillip |

Philip, thanks for posing that question...I guess it's a matter of perspective. I've been doing kidshows for over ten years and I still make mistakes when planning and performing for this challenging age-group!
I've also enjoyed your knowledgeable posts and feel privileged to have you answer to one of my own! Thanks for sharing with all of us! |

"You're a silly magician!" - "That's my job, kid!"
"You're a silly magician!" - "I am not! I'm very serious! I'm not funny at all! [to the crowd:] She says I'm silly! Am I silly?" The crowd screams YES! And I get to put on the look of sheer panic that gets them all laughing hysterically as I start the next effect. |
