(Apologies for repeating this from a couple of other sections, but I'm not quite sure where it belongs! Maybe the moderators can help..?)
No, not Book TESTS, but actual effects using the familiar leather-and-paper combo article. I've seen a couple of goodies - flaming ones and a giant one whose pages mysteriously turn: any more that anyone could recommend? Thanks! |

There's a more subtle use for a book in Corinda's "13 Steps" as an inexpensive alternative to a clipboard.

McC, thanks for the reminder anyway - though really I am looking for effects where the book 'is' the effect - in a more overt way!

Luber Fedler had a soft bound book where the pages are riffled showing normal paragraphs, then again riffled and now all pages are pictures of lingerie models. This was similar in working to the Coloring book/ stamp album principle.
Also Art Emerson sold a small book where words changed to music notes and more. What sold this was his patter story that accompanied the trick. Again, on this same principle. |

Get two identical books and you can do something akin to the "World Famous Banana Trick" - however, you will need big hands (or small books).

In the context of a mentalism discussion, there really isn't any call for a book that "is" the effect -- as mentalists, it's our minds that are supposed to be important, not our props.
Now, if you're looking for mental effects that use a book as a prop without adhering to the typical "look-at-a-word-and-I'll-read-your-mind" book test plot, I think we can come up with a few. There's the classic Bert Reese billet clairvoyance routines (as described by Annemann in Practical Mental Effects), which uses paper torn from the blank back page of a book (the soft, pulpy paper is ideal for this purpose). Rick Maue (in his Book of Haunted Magick) has an audience member use a dictionary and a finger smudged with ashes to apparently divine the thoughts of another audience member in his "Inside Out Book Test." Arthur Emerson's "Pegasus Page" (which Ted Lesley's elaborates upon in Paramiracles) uses a chosen page to demonstrate not telepathy, but teleportation. For something more mediumistic and less purely mental, Jay Inglee's "Book of Spirits" (performed in Burger's Eugene Goes Bizarre video and described in Burger's book, Strange Ceremonies) uses a book as part of a light seance/spirit writing experiment. Whether your context is spiritualism or PK demonstration, books can be rigged quite handily to fall off a table or shelf unexpectedly. I'm sure there are more, but this should be enought to get you started.

Thanks Neil - I'm already well on my way, but there are some good suggestions there, as well as some I'm familiar with. Not quite sure about your point over the book 'being' the effect, but you seem to have understood what I mean anyway!
Rob - I can only say - Secret Sessions? I think not... RC4MAG - most grateful for the reminder/pointer. BTW is that your name, or your car licence plate? |

Docc Hilford's Version of Pegasus. Gosh the name has slipped my mind. Book test like in the begining - torn out page appears elsewhere.
Nice post by Michael Thanks, Rex |

Rex, it's The Wizard's Manual, I have it, and yes, it's great! I've since made another version on Docc's template.

A late reply, but there is also the "Stamp Album" trick where a bunch of postage stamps vanish and re-appear pasted in the stamp album.
And how about the book that Moretti uses as part of the broomstick illusion. |

THere 's a little thing to do with a book which always has its effect, it's more "Bizarre" than mentalism, but you can dress it in psychic way.
I will open a topic on the secret session, because it may be not the place to discuss of it. Follow : http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......tart=0#0 See you soon,
