I want to learn pocket watch manipulation. But I don't have the slightest idea. What books teach about this? What props do I need to buy? Where to get them?
Thanks. |

If you mean the old-fashioned large round "railroad conductor" type of watch, I believe that Jean Hugard's "Modern Magic Manual" (published in the late 1930's) has a chapter on pocket watch effects.
This book has been reprinted by Dover Books and can be obtained from Barnes & Noble at http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksea......mp;itm=1 or from Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0486418774/qid=1094424401/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-9281961-6417615?v=glance&s=books. The watch sleights are variations of familiar coin or card sleights (French Drop, etc.). There are also a number of proprietary dealer's effects involving pocket watches, such as the Multiplying Watches (see http://daytonamagic.net/customer/index.c......tId=9759 ), the Stull Watch, and the Watch Box, which is a bigger version of a Lippincott Box (see http://daytonamagic.net/customer/index.c......tId=6445 ). Also take a look on Hank Lee's website (see http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/customer/product.php?productid=1551&cat=&page=1. I think Viking Magic may also have some pocket watch effects, which would be of excellent quality but pretty pricey. You can probably pick up some decent old-fashioned pocket watches in pawn shops or antique stores at relatively low prices, considering that it's not too important that they keep good time or even be in working order for magical purposes. Actually, you could probably create a very interesting routine with these props! Good luck in your search. SETH

Check out, if you can, Ren Wei Dong's act. It is excellent, and all about pocket watches. Also, check out Tora Magic and Steven's Magic emporium. They sell EXCELLENT gimmicked watches. Some are exactly like the ones used in Ren's act.

Cyril Harvey has a trick in his 2004 lecture notes using a pocket watch. It is a very clean appearance of the pocket watch using a silk.

What I also often times find helpful is to simply pick up the object or different versions or sizes of the object and just start playing around with them. Oftentimes by doing this, you will find that card moves or ball moves or coin moves work just as well with this new object.
You also start to learn the feel and handling of the object in your own hands and what works best for you. You learn to adapt moves and this starts your creative juices flowing in new directions that are different from the norm. Kyle

Get a video from Richard Ross (twice FISM champion). He closes his act with one of the greatest routines with pocket watches.
Jeff Sheridan has a great trick with a pocket watch on one of his DVDs. |
