While practicing to get some sleights and coin routine out of ungimmicked coins I thought to start doing some coin magic with one of these sets. Which do you think is the best to get good impressions and routines? And BTW, since I live in Italy and I'd like to practice coin magic with half-dollar coins (euros are too small for me) anyone could tell me where to get some US coins?
Thanks in advance. Metius

Both sets are good, but I'd suggest you start with the Scotch & Soda. And rather than use the hoary "guess what's in my hand" routine, get yourself the "25 Tricks with a Scotch & Soda" DVD. See http://themagicwarehouse.com/beginner7.html#vi9295 It has lots of good ideas for using this set, and will teach you some sleights to use as well. Since you live in Italy, just check to make sure that the DVD will play OK overseas on your computer or DVD player.
You might also consider getting a Copper/Silver coin; Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic" has many good effects that you can do with it. It comes with an English Penny, an obsolete British copper coin that's about the size of a U.S. half dollar. Whatever you get, I would get the Johnson brand of gimmicked coins. They cost a little more, but are well made, durable and well worth it. You should be able to get the coins and the DVD from The Magic Warehouse; see http://themagicwarehouse.com/johnson2.html#jo1443 I have had good experiences with this firm over the past three years and can recommend them with confidence. When you place your order, ask Howard if he can add a few U.S. half dollars and quarters; he probably can. Otherwise, I would think you could get U.S. coins at a bank. Good Luck! SETH

I have heard bad things about the 1.35 trick. Mainly because the dime looks terribly fake.

Both are fun sets. However you will probably get more use out of Scotch and Soda based on the reason you say you want to work with them. I have never beed burned with the "thinness" of the dime in $1.35 trick. However it is best done on a table, and in fact looks best if you do some “table through” with it. On the other hand S&S can be done standing with a very “impromptu” look. You may also want to look at Todd Lassen’s site for some of the many coins he makes S&S from. Bob |

I have been thinking of getting a 1.35 set, but I was worried about the quality. I will have to see what Todd can do for me.

Astinus,
If the dime looks fake, it depends on the company that makes it. If you buy Johnson, they should be the best makers. Get yourself a $1.35 trick, and you won't regret it. It's amazing. Best of luck, Michael |

While Johnson makes some nice coins, Todd Lassen's work is on a plane far above theirs. So is Jamie Schoolcraft's and Auke Van Dokkum's.

I've a brand new unused $1.35 set from Johnsons. Got it from my father-in-law, Haakon Edeling (some might know him for his manipulative act in the 1940's and up to the 70's, butterflies, cigarettes also).
Never touched that thing. Make me an offer by PM. My drawers are filled with stuff I never use.

I've done the locking $1.35 for twenty years. I have used a table, and have also done it with all four coins in the palm of my hand. I'm comfortable either way. No one ever told me that I had to have a table to do it, so I never thought that I did. Ignorance is bliss!

In time you will have both. They are both great in the right hands. Scotch and Soda is more fun to do because it happens in the spectator's hands.
Personally, I get more mileage out of the "loose" $1.35. It looks good on camera. So I use it for the talk TV shows before stage shows. From there it is an easy switch to another half (all of mine are 1981s) and it leaves you set to burn them with something else. This is also an easy way to slip in another announcement about the show. I don't use a close-up pad. I use a handbill about the show (turned correctly for the camera) to place the dime, quarter and two halves upon. Put the halves at opposite ends. Cover the works with a handkerchief. Then go to work. Keep the left hand down on the table for the camera. (That will help the camera zoom in.) Once the coins are moved to the left hand, remove one half and show the empty hand. Then the emphasis is on the handkerchief. The audience still has hope! When the hank is removed, there is the handbill for the audience to read on camera! (If you can't switch halves during this, hire a magician! You are also set to perform it again, if you get the loose set.) In a club or walk around venue, you will need multiple Scotch and Sodas for a night's work. You can get by with just one loose $1.35. (In a night club, you can sell several Scotch & Sodas a night to salesmen in the bar. Make sure that is OK with the boss first!) So that should leave you totally confused! I vote for the "loose" $1.35 first. (But I get them six at a time. They never come back from the cleaners!) Good luck! Bob Magic By Sander |

As in most cases, there are ways around that problem. Some creative usage of the bang ring and a little imagination fixes that right up, and creates a nice variety in your CS routines S&S standard routine for one table, the next table gets a copper extraction routine that employs the ring. Then back to the standard S&S for the third table, and so on. S&S isn't the biggest selling magic trick of all time for nothing Best, Mike |

I'm looking for a good locking coins set with modern British coins or euros. The only gaffed euro manufacturer I know is Tango (of Argentina) but I hear they don't make very realistic coins.
Can anyone suggest a brand of (almost foolproof) locking modern British or euro coins? Does anyone happen to know why Tango euros are dodgy? |

I'd say Scotch & Soda hands down. I get request for this. I have the $1.35 coin trick, but don't care for it. It says it's examinable, BUT I don't think so. Why? Because most spectators will most likely shake the coins. BAD IDEA!!! They will hear & feel something if they do. I've had the trick like 5 years and have maybe done it 5 times. I have a few coin tricks, but I LOVE Cards more. I have hopping halves. My complaint with this is people will think the coins just multiply, in which they will be right. I have coin to brass nest of boxes. It's okay, a little noisy though. I have lethal tender. GET IT!!! Is all I can say. I have the Ultimate Brass, Copper, Silver transposition which is cool. It took me quite a while to learn. I haven't done it years. I really have no complaint though on it. I like the simple, cheaper to coin version, where a silver in one hand cleanly switches places with the copper in the other hand. I also recommend Nickles to dimes. Anyway that's my two cents...HaHaHa...Ed, (Eddini).

My scotch and soda is pretty loose...I can reset it by loosely holding the coin by its edge and lightly banging the other edge against, say, the quarter...not so loose to be suspicious though, anyways I try to switch it out before the final reveal anyways... -Jason |
