Hello all,
Just a quick note to let you know that my new book "In League with the Devil" is now available (in all the usual places - PM me for details) I know, it's a blatant plug, but I'm very proud of whats on offer the effects included are as follows: The first effect: 20 QUESTIONS: A psychological "experiment" that culminates in the performer correctly reading the participants thoughts. Offering a new approach to an old but exciting concept. Second up, two effects in one... PRIME MACHINE: 1)The Performer draws the face of a watch without the hands. The participant signs and holds the image then thinks of and concentrates on an hour of the day. After due concentration the participant opens the image to discover the merely thought of time burnt into the image of the watch!! 2)The participant holds his wristwatch firmly in his hands and concentrates on an hour of the day. Again after due concentration the watch is seen to have moved to the very thought of time! The third effect: PSYCHOLIBRI: An impromptu book test for a small group. Using any book at any time! It’s as simple as that. The participant chooses a book, chooses a page number and line then "transmits" the entire line of text to the performer. And guess what? You can reveal the whole line of text word for word. Finally, MAGIC UNRIDDLE: An amazingly straightforward and powerful stage effect with two participants. One thinks of a random and unknowable piece of personal information (such as her birth date) the second is then able, with a little effort, to slowly but surely describe this very thought!! You can play this a psychological or psychic presentation, either way it never fails to impress! It's clean and effective and appears exactly as described! Any questions just ask! All the best, Daniel Love |

Hi Daniel,
Love the name of your book! But if it's not too much trouble, could you please more completely describe your effects? Forgive me for saying so, but right now it reads like empty dealer copy. "20 Questions" could be anything as it's currently written. "Prime Machine," Phase 1 doesn't say anything about the performer touching the billet prior to it being opened by the participant -- and if the performer doesn't touch it, that's a major selling point; Phase 2 reads like PK Time. "Psycholibri" doesn't go into the selection process of book, page and line, so the fairness of it may be an issue. "Magic Unriddle" as currently described could include any pairing of pre-show and cueing; so as a consumer, I need to know what's special about your version. Much thanks, Neil Tobin http://www.SupernaturalChicago.com

No problem at all necromancer, I'll do my best,
Prime machine presentation (1) - no the performer needn't touch the billet after it has been signed - there are various presentations that can be applied to this effect - depending on your skills, but needless to say the signed billet can be opend by either the participant or the performer. presentation (2) is completely different methodology from PK time but achieves much the same effect, it's also impromptu. The premise for PrimeMachine could have many further uses. Psycholibri - You could walk into a bookstore and perform this. ANY book can be used. the members of the audience (no stooges) choose the page and line number. You are not holding the book whilst the page and line number a choosen or at any point after. 20 questions - It's a hard effect to describe, you are essentially demonstrating a "psychological experiement" to a participant. The effect is essentially a new twist on a psychological force that increases your odds, gives you multiple conclusions (if you wish) and makes the whole thing very hard to reverse engineer. Magic unriddle is an effect that DOES involve preshow (you've been warned!) the strength of the effect (in my mind) is the method involved in the revelation. It's not something you are going to use if you do not do stage work, TV or Radio - but I am pretty certain that those of you that do perform in these mediums will use it! The strength of the effect is this... The participant who acts as the Reader is TRUELY suprised to have done so, it really appears that they have picked thoughts "out of the air." I hope that's cleared up a few points. It's a little late and the brain is running on "automatic" so I hope it all makes sense! Daniel In League with the Devil - will currently be offline at magic-notes briefly. It should be available again within 24 hours! |

Well I thought I would give you the benefit of the doubt after your last one Daniel, as I feel I was a bit harsh, so I have ordered it and read it.
I must say that if I was disappointed before I am more so now that I am out of pocket even more! The first effect, 20 Questions is a convoluted Mental Yarn, and as for the force this is older than my grandmother and she knows it. The watch effect I could have screamed. Without going into any disclosure I hate to break it to you, but that isn't going to fool anyone. The 'secret' everyone and his dog knows, it is standard pub quiz and trivial pursuit general knowledge. Sorry. I even asked my girlfriend out of the blue with no frame of reference and she gave me the answer. Psycholibri - I hope you do not seriously perform this? Have you thought about how it looks to the audience. It is one step away from using dice and cards to force the page. I am afraid that I just skimmed through the final effect as it sounded too much like the thing Derren Brown did on his recent TV series. 10p to be a mind reader. Sorry Daniel, you obviously worked hard on this and congratulations on getting an e-book out there but I can't see how these could be used by a serious performer. |

No problem Salsa - if you are unhappy with what you purchased then I am very sorry - you are a hard man to please - shame as I was just feeling great after getting a very good response from another chap.
Well, I'll leave it to the others to see what they think about the ebook - judging from your response to DreamSigns it would appear that your opinion isn't always in line with that of others. By the ways for those of you that are interested "In league with the Devil" is temporarily offline due to an upload problem - shall be available again by the morning (UK time) All the best, Daniel |

Sure thing slalsa,
I do think given your review was posted less than an hour after the book first went on sale I don't hold much power in it. I personaly like to digest, learn and at least try methods before I review them - not just ask my girlfriend, it's a bit like getting a thumb writer and waliking up to your girlfriend (a magicians girlfriend no doubt) and asking "can you see anything nunny with my hands?" Dosn't really give you the right to review thumb writers does it? Just a thought. |

I've read In league with the devil and rather liked it. it was really very good! I tried the booktest and the psychollibri effects already and found that both of them worked well. I think you are being overly cynical SD. I do think though SD that by mentioning that the final effect is very similar to the master Derren Brown is going to do Daniel nothing but good, and I agree it seems to create very much the same effect, I don't do stage work but I would love to try it out it seems vey clever. I havnt tried the 20 questions effect yet but I wouldnt call it convoluted at all, just a very workable routine with a good plot.Daniel, thanks for putting another great ebook out! by the way by nunny, do you mean funny?
So in my humble opinion, after trying the effects and reading throught the manuscript several times I think this stuff is good, it is very different from Daniels previous book but very good. So it gets my seal of approval! I also agree with Daniel judging an effect on your own partners response is a bad idea, mine is sick to death of magic and it would take me flying around the room making monkyes apear out of my butt to get even a glimmer of recognition. |

I Will repost my deleted post without the bits that have caused problems for completeness so that this thread makes sense.
Daniel, of course you don't hold much power in it as it was negative, what about the guy that gave you good feedback that you mentioned. How much power do you hold in that one? Quote:
I personaly like to digest, learn and at least try methods before I review them - not just ask my girlfriend I have read and performed enough effects to understand how it is going to look to an audience. I wouldn't embarass myself using these on my clientele. Quote:
Totally, totally different. I asked her a trivia question, nothing to do with magic as you put it. I shall pose the same question here and see if anyone else can answer it. TRIVIA: *DELETED TRIVIA QUESTION AS IT MAY BE CONSIDERED EXPOSURE?* Sure there will be people who cannot answer that, but you are going to be surprised how may people can. As for the *[DELETED WORD]* force, I have had people I perform for use that back to me along with the old Denmark trick, which is why I would never use it. That is half the book out of the window, and as I don't want to be a Derren Brownclone I would not use the 10p to be a mind reader style effect. I was happy to leave it as it wasn't for me, and maybe some would like it. It is a shame that you weren't either you have only performed these effects for stupid people, or you have only done them three or four times. Just a thought. |

I think the "release an e-book" craze has started. I think far too many have popped up in the last month and many are fluff.

Perhaps you are right David,
But please at least read the book before you make suggestions to it's viability in a thread designed to review it. |

First, two things:
1) I have bought and read the book. 2) I've had it for less than 24 hours, and have not tried anything from it in real life yet. With those caveats out of the way, I feel it was a very worthwhile purchase, and I say this even though I don't see myself performing any of the effects in it. Some people would be disappointed with such a purchase, but in every effect I found something -- some ploy or subtlety or combination of techniques -- that I'll be able to put to good use elsewhere. For me, that makes it worth having. YMMV. As for the specific effects... While 20 Questions does have certain things in common with Mental Yarn, I don't think it's fair to call it simply a "convoluted" version of that effect. In fact, although the process is more involved than that of Mental Yarn, I think the scripting makes it more logical and believable, as well as harder to backtrack. The specifics may or may not be to your liking, but the layering of principles can be used in many ways. As for the idea behind Prime Machine, it was new to me, and would have fooled me had I seen it performed -- although it is, of course, entirely possible that I am merely exceptionally dense and out touch. With the comments it has received, I'll now do some informal research before trying to use the idea, and withold jungement until I get a better sense of its viability. I must again respectfully disagree with Salsa in his assessment of Psycholibri. I think the process is a far cry from using dice and cards, and in fact has much more in common with Autome, which is frequently cited as a favorite book test. And unlike Autome, it can, as the copy claims, be done with any book, any time, with no preparation. This is the effect that I would be most likely to use as-is, if I weren't already happy with my current book tests. And I'll definitely find other purposes for the method behind it. Magic Unriddle details a very clever use of pre-show work that doesn't look like pre-show work. Never having seen Derren's 10p bit, I can't comment on any similarity there, but the effect is strong. I don't know if I could pull it off myself, but again, I can use the thinking behind it in ways that I can pull off. Things I got from the book that I will use: • A way of strengthening certain psychological forces. • A nice equivoque subtlety. • A handy psychological number force. • Ideas for visually cueing spectators toward certain conclusions. • Another type of force which might kill or might suck, depending on who turns out to be right. For me, that's worth twenty bucks.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

Thanks Quinn,
I'll just comment on the force that "may kill or suck" I've certainly not come across anyone who has "known the secret" in the many, many times I've performed it. That's not to say that you will perhaps at some point come across someone who will - But I feel the risk of this is quite slim indeed, those of you who use a swami gimmick will no doubt have at some point come across someone who read the "lead under the fingernail" trick in a kids magic book. I think the risk factor is much the same - possible but unlikely. I've done my research and that's why I felt it worth sharing! But there may be regional or social-group based factors that come into play, so a wider field of experiment (beyond what I could provide as just one performer) is needed to discover if the complete validity of this force. But my hunch is that you will have as much luck with it as I have. |
