What are the best sources for impromptu mentalism?

Perhaps the strongest single effect you can perform impromptu would be some sort of name or word revelation. Do a centre tear with whatever scrap of paper is lying around. I've used receipts in the past.
To the best of my knowledge, there isn't any one source specifically dedicated to 'impromptu' mentalism. Having said that, both cold reading and muscle reading can be performed anywhere and at any time. Curiously, these two skills are about as close to 'real' mind reading as you can come. There are many books dedicated to learning both cold reading and muscle reading.

True. Almost all of my more "mentalist" impromptu effects are Banacheks (or Banachek inspired more like it).

Stephen is right about the Center Tear. I've used it many times impromptu. The only problem I've ever had, is once you need it, paper and a pencil/pen can seem surprisingly, not to mention frustratingly, hard to find at times. In those cases the others are correct, Banachek's stuff is good. PK Time comes to mind.
Also, if you can do the Center Tear, then you can probably do a few other things with the paper. 13 Steps has some good effects you could do. Personally, I like the Crystal Locket but that kind of thing may not be for you. If not search around, you'll find something.

Well, I'm jumping the bandwagon by saying Banachek (but its a good bandwagon) Pk Time comes to mind, Psychological Subtleties comes to mind aswell. And like it was said before, if you could find the supplies then center tears would be good and if silverware is near you - go for some bending. Also, probably my favorite impromptu piece would be Osterlinds Watch Routine. Absolutely amazing for what you need/do. ALWAYS slays.
Thanks! Scott B.

Center Tear
Bending Silverware Pk Time Learn a memorized deck like Tamariz. You can do miracles, and the best way to put the deck in the mnemonic order if you have it shuffled, do a memory demonstration and it's back in order. HOW??? Cut the deck in about 4 piles and give them to different spectators (it speeds things up). Then say you are going to try to go thru the entire deck without repeating cards. Then just ask them to give you the cards as you call them, going from card number 1 to card 52 following the order of the stack. When you are finished not only have you done a quite impressive memory demonstration, but you have the deck in your hand back in order (this idea came directly out of the Tamariz books, for you guys that don't have the English version)

Asking someone to grab paper and pen while I do a silly slightly improptu effect. I always carry a TT on me and I ask the spec to think of a number between 1 and 4 (I know silly) w/ TT on right hand, holding thumb w/TT and index and middle finger extended behind cover of left hand. I ask them to reveal the number if it is #3 remove TT with left hand at time of revelation if it is #2 remove all three with thumb tip and I say "I thought so while pulling of TT, retracting thumb to show thumb was fake only 2 real fingers leaving the index and middle (I KNOW IT IS SILLY) but that creates time for paper and pen to be gotten and it lets down the guard of the spec(s) just before you do a center tear.... just my thoughts
If you cannot convince them, confuse them.

I would think that Bill Abbott's "Mind Control" is about as impromptu as you can get, since two of the gaffes are things many, if not most, people carry all the time and are fully serviceable for their non-mentalism-related ostensible purposes.
My only concern (as someone who did buy the effect but hasn't tried it out on anyone yet) is the issue of whether or not a significant number of people who see it performed will figure it out right way.

I can't recall off the top of my head whether this appears in the Encyclopedia of Card Magic, but the Nikola Stack Reconstruction described by Nachtzehrer above originally (again, I THINK) involved forced cards.
What you'd do is force the first four cards of the stack on four people (I actually use three). What I've done is force them with a riffle-down (then just hand out the top three card from the break). I take the cards back in order, overhand shuffle them to the bottom, then HaLo cut the third card to the bottom of the top third, handing it to the third spectator, repeat the HaLo and hand back the top half to the second and the bottom half to the first. The HaLo, btw, is a sort of reverse slip cut hidden under a swing cut. The bottom card travels with the top half of the deck. The result is that each person is now holding a third of the deck that contains the person's own selection. Needless to say, I ask each of them to shuffle immediately. I'm pretty certain the shuffles and matched return of selection to spectator are not in the Nikola section. My apologies for repeating it if they are. Frankly, I've had occasion to do this only twice, but it played better than I thought it would for a sort of long trick. I do make it a point to pause at the 10th, 26th and 40th cards to ask if anyone's selection has come up - this keeps the pace interesting and seems more impossible with each "no." Finally, on the fly, I've decided that when any person is left holding one card (his own selection), I should immediately identify it. It winds up slightly out of stack, but it's easily corrected. |

Personally, when I want impromptu, I do Maven's "Positive / Negative" on my business card, with some of my own twists and some of Kenton Knepper's verbiage so I can hand the card out.

I do an impormptu version of the time machine effect whcih can be done with a borrowed watch, or my own watch. Also psychological card forces are good, if you can work them.
One day I will write a book

I ask the spec to name a number between 1 and 10 and then I hold out my palm showing it's empty. After concentrating the specs can see the blood vessels slowly forming the number they named. There isn't many effects better than that and you can do it impromptu and naked if you wanted to. The concept is Banachek's and if you are familiar with his stuff and you do a bit of extra thinking you know exactly how to do it.
I do it with several variations on the basic method so that it looks the same but cancels out each other. I'll do it with my hands visible the whole time sometimes so that people won't think something was done beforehand. Jonathan Grant |

I really wish we'd see replies to this that entail GENUINE Improvisation vs. the classic "I carry a deck of cards, a TT, a Swami, a Peek Case and dozen and one other things in my pockets JUST IN CASE..." This Boy Scout attitude IS NOT true improvisation.
I'll agree, much of Banachek's material can literally be improvisation because it depends upon one's own wit, skill with words and knowledge of commonalities, etc. There are other sources including Anagram techniques that are just as powerful if not moreso, such as Grismer's "What's My Sign" or the popular "Dead Presidents" routine. You have "Angel or Devil" type speils not to mention a plethora of routines that can be done via force techniques, muscle reading, and general character reading... that's before you find yourself in the position of having to pick up the first slip of paper and a pencil... when we start down that path... well, there's at least 1001 routines we could muster just from the lowly little billet or Center Tear. So, how many of you actually challenge yourselves to learn how to do Mentalism that is genuinely impromptu? Who here can deliver a solid 30+ minutes of Psychic Entertainment without relying on a single gimmick -- just personal knowledge and understanding of basic principles? When you can do that much, you'll know you're on the path towards genuine stardom... it's the kind of PR reputation that money just can't buy and the public loves. Ironically, it's exactly how "real life" Psychics build their own rep, so it's something to consider, don't you think? |

Well, the other day I was pressured into giving a small show and did close to 30 minutes of reputation-getting material using nothing more than my body and what was around.
I used the effect I posted above, PK touches, PK time, some Psychological forces, impromptu key bending, silverware bending (one guy went and got some real quick), and I think another one or two I just can't remember. I also used my version of Kolossal Killer that's just always in my wallet (which I know may not be considered impromptu even though I'm never without my wallet). My version only uses 4 cards, though, because of psychological "stuff" I've added to it. Banachek is the master at this, though. He fooled the scientists for a couple of years using nothing more than improvosation! Jonathan Grant |
