You're right Mike. I remember meeting her at FFFF back in the 1980's. She is very good. I heard she was working doing magical entertainment in Atlantic City. Do you know what ever happened to her??

No Mike...I lost touch with her years ago. I had heard that she was working at her Dad's shop until it closed (Mecca Magic in New Jersey). I also heard she was doing some Clowning as well as magic...and at one point she had married. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine. Oh, one more thing Mike. Please don't post dates when referencing time frames of meeting people--you're just dating us and our ages...LOL!

Paulajayne manages to write well with her tongue firmly planted in her cheek! That's good.
As far as world class women magicians are concerned, I have known more than one. Celeste Evans -- she came to Houston when I was in High School. She was a very beautiful woman who knew how to do a really high-class act. Diana Zimmerman -- a good performer. I don't know whether I would put her in the same category as Celeste, but still an excellent performer, anyway. Rebekah Yen -- excellent manipulator. These are by no means all of them, just the ones who made a lasting impression.

"World Class"? I have seen and taught many very very talented magicians - male, female and transgendered. Several were world class but it is down to them getting the breaks and being known. There are so many brilliant magicians that just do the job they love and earn a living. I would love to do a TV special with some of them to show the world that they are there, and ready to knock the socks off the general public with their skills and style. Paula

I know what you mean, and I think in the case of some of the last you mentioned, I believe I know who you mean!
There are a lot of excellent performers out there who are never recognized because they simply don't get out of their narrow sphere of performance. It was basically a couple of simple coincidences that got John Ramsay the recognition he deserved that made him into a recognized world-class performer. If those breaks had not happened, he would have been just another greengrocer who happened to fiddle with coins. I got to see Mystina do her show at the IBM convention in Cleveland. Excellent! She certainly deserves more recognition than what she gets in the Magic Circular. I hope to get to see her again when I come over for the Centenary next year. And there are others, I'm sure.

Hi Paula,
I'd love to come and see you perform, do you have any regular gigs that have access for the general public? Any other recommendations for seeing live magic in and around London are always welcome. Chris |

I've never seen Paula perform, but I appreciate her comments, her wit, and her unusual--for a lady performer --qualified insight regarding the finer points of magic.
So my vote--and I only judge parlour/close-up--for a world class female magic performer goes to: LISA MENNA!

Lisa Menna is a delight. She lived here in Houston for a while, and I had the honor of being able to do a little coaching for her when she was just starting out. She has done very well.

She IS a delight. She knows how to WALK up to her audience and how to address them. Apart from her card in the shoe it's very good handling and magic.
She knows how to smile too, so who cares regarding the rest of the magic?

The only problem is that women are on TV less than men. All the magicians we can see on TV are men, especially in France! How is the situation of women magicians in the USA?

It has been said that Julie Ng (Sorry if I get her last name wrong), has one of the best coins through table right now.
She lives up in Canada. She was also at the 4F's. |
