I have seen both of them do it. For me, it's Blaney, hands down. But Blaney is gifted with a 2 meter "wingspan." That makes a big difference!

Having seen Blaney do his repeat vanishing cage at a convention. He did it maybe 3 or 4 times, in a row. Never leaving the stage. His one handed fleck of the wrist vanish is a real wonder. It is so effortless that you suspect nothing.

He then followed with the dual ball and paddle routine. Finishing with his chair suspension. Wow! Blaney told me he doesn't use a reel or anything but the old cord hookup. This is really hard to believe as there is no movement as I remember his presentation, except the flick of his wrist. Truely magical.

I have Tommy Wonders videos and that is the only time I have seen him perform. I hope to one day see him do his act in person. His is truly well thought out and a great method as well.

McCombs vanish is okay, only as I perfer the instant fast vanish to his slow method. His method does put the vanishing cage into more magicians abilities to put this in their acts. I do think his idea of a mouse in place of a canary is genius. I would have never thought of this in a hundred years. Do to many people having mice as pets now-a-days, they can relate to this very well.

I have to chime in here. I would have to say that the most entertaining vanish I have seen was Billy McComb at the Castle.

I haven't seen the Wonder videos, but in Books of Wonder (Vol. 2) he really goes into detail on modifying cages for speed & smoothness of action.

Actually, the slow motion vanish is much, much more difficult than a fast vanish. Billy doesn't seem to even move his shoulders as he does it. He can show the cage is solid and hold it from the top, even after his hook-up, which is completely clean and he can do the trick at any time in his act. It is a true wonder.

Whit,

You are correct as usual. As I said previously it is totally my personal taste.

I would like to note that Blaney get the cage from behind his back, under his coat. It does not spoil the effect at all. So he can do it anytime during his act also.

I like the McComb set up. It will answer many needs this effect has for the performer.

cheesewrestler, The version on the Wonder DVD videos has many changes that the book does not have for the hook up. I think if you plan on attempting to make it up you will benefit from the video.

Bill:

It is always going to be a matter of personal taste, and as I said, both Blaney and Wonder are fantastic.

For those who haven't seen Billy's vanish here is a short clip done without the transparent cloth:

Enjoy!

Whit,

Wow, that looks fantastic! Thank you very much for the movie. Gee could I be wrong? It may be that I will have to spend the $1500 at Encore Magic and work on this some more. It is to bad the video by Encore did not detail the working better. They could have put this movie on the tape as an alterative vanish.

I will continue to unravel this mystery.

This movie is on the Encore tape. It is from the AFI film starring Billy McComb: "Presto."

It is one of the rare occasions he has done on film without the transparent cloth, the use of which he thinks, and I agree, makes the vanish even a little stronger.

However, sometimes magicians need to see what is really being hidden under that scrap of silk--nothing.

The cage just melts away. His arms and shoulders don't seem to be doing anything. It is quite a piece of work.

As hard as it is to say that someone of Billy's stature could be under-rated, sometimes I think we forget what a master of magic he really is--he is not just a charming and funny presenter of tricks with an encyclopedic knowledge of magic.

He is a true craftsman of magic and sleight of hand who knows how to hide his truly rare skill and art and make it look effortless. He is the real deal.

Yes, Tommy Wonder is a marvel as well. I am a fan of Walter Blaney's, too.

Just wanted to make sure that people knew what Billy did with this classic. His version is so practical and so visually stunning.

We all have forgotten the latest most impressive Vanishing Bird Cage being performed today. James Dimmare's Shrinking and Vanishing Bird Cage is the most inventive version I have seen to date.

It is truly a perfect illusion of the Vanishing Bird Cage. He was told it could not be done, but he went ahead and did it anyway.

Fantastic!

I just found this reference of Walter Zaney Blaney performing the Bird Cage Vanish at an interview.

At the IBM convention Walter Blaney is doing a vanishing birdcage bit that's fantastic

http://www.magician.org/videos/Thurs_Aft......laney.rm

Not an show performance, but an example of doing the cage close up. He says on the video that he does it strolling!

Hey Whit, Wanted to say hi, loved your lectures and performances @ MMD!

Sorry, I just had to say that really quick. Billy McComb has done an AMAZING JOB with the Vanishing birdcage. I have not seen a routine like this ever. As I live 5-10 minutes from Encore Magic, I have been fortunate enough to see the process of making the Encore Cage. It is one of the best cages on the market, and honestly doesn't look like a mass of wire. The style as you probably already know is a Lindhorst style, and has not one snag spot on it. If you get a cage guys, or girls, get this one, I'm not trying to advertise, but it is one the best out there. So if you want to knock the socks off your next victims(audience), get this cage!

I have to admit, after seeing Billy McComb perform last weekend, I'm tempted to buy one of the cages. That has to be the nicest looking version that I've ever seen, and I've seen a few.

The abbott magic vanishing birdcage is the best. It is the fastest, most quiet and least likely to snag. It can be done on stage and closeup and comes in 2 sizes, although it does take a lot of practice and rehearsal to learn to hold it.

Even Blackstone who used many owen magic illusions still used abbott magic's birdcage.

You can spend hours discussing which birdcage is the best. It all depends on your setup. Blaney prefers the Owen cage. So do I. I used it for 20+ years when I did my Merlin show at the Texas Renaissance Festival and Scarborough Faire. I learned how to do it from Walter Blaney. Both of us found that the Abbott's cage tends to hang up where the Owen cage doesn't. The ribbon binding of the Abbott's cage also has a tendency to wear. My first Owen cage lasted me 12 years. My second one is still perfect.

The worst cage made is the Milson-Worth. It will tear your s_____ off!

I told Lynn what he needed to do with it to make it workable, but he wouldn't do it.

The most entertaining routine I ever saw with the vanishing bird cage was done by Allan Hayden.

I liked Ken Brooke's version, which he taught me. It is clever and funny. The first magaic trick I remember ever seeing was Steve Shepherd doing the cage and being searched after... stripping to his boxer shorts!
