Sponge Balls or Mult. rabbits work great in these situations. Whenever I get repeat customers it's the one the kids always remember, and always want to see again.

I used to use standard red, but switched to the neon pink and green ones sold by Hank Lee (Goshman products)> However, after watching Duane Laflin last year, I've switched to using 3 inch purple, pink and green ones! Check out his multi-color sponge ball routines on his sponge video. They are truly workers!

Here's how I get into my sponge routine -
I have a red solid ball, a blue silk (for contrast) and my red sponge balls in my right outside coat pocket. I reach in to remove the silk and classic palm the solid ball. I then go on to show the silk all around and then produce the ball from it. I then hand the ball to a spectator or two so they can feel it to make sure it's real. While they do that I put the silk away and finger palm a sponge ball. Now I take back the solid ball and toss it into the air a couple of times while talking. On the last toss the solid ball actually gets topited and the sponge ball is released. The visual is perfect! I immediately hand the ball to the spectator again and their jaws drop (really) as they feel that the ball is now soft and spongy. From there I just go into my regular sponge routine. It's quick and easy and just a great little piece to get into a sponge ball routine. I've done it for years. If you live outside of Australia then please feel free to use it yourself as well. Cheers Billy |

I've been using Sponge Ball Surprise, from one of the Dick Stoner tapes, for years. The routine has been gradually expanded and continues to develop further. It's very strong!

Like Nicholas and magicgeorge, I use Jay Sankey's Earplugs. After I take them "out of my ears" I put them one at a time in my top hat and each time I put one in a sponge banana appears in it's place. I put the two sponge bananas in my ears and wiggle them saying "I don't remember putting bananas in my ears!"
I love the squeaker bit magicgeorge! I also do a Gozinta Box routine with sponge balls. Children and adults (especially women) love the sponge balls. When I was actively doing closeup restaurant work women would sometimes let out a scream when the balls multiplied in their hand. Back then I used the squeaker, pressing the ball on the table with my forefinger and saying "If you are pure of heart the little ball will squeak for you." The woman could make it squeak but the man could not. I quickly showed that "you need one of these things to make it work" so the man didn't feel insulted. The basic idea came from Dave Williamson I think.

I use a sponge ball routine to open my show.
Always receive very good response from Kids and parents. My routine includes: + Sponge balls production from hand & mouth. + Benson Bowl. + BOO X 2 from Barry Mitchell The routine includes a complete story that allows me to link from one trick to the other. For strolling rabbits work very good. Color of balls used: red green & orange from Goshman, the best sponge balls, period. |

Sponges are a fun prop. They can help customize my nearly normal programs for consumers.
I have lots of different colors. Depending on the event, my costume, time of year they vary. Blue and Red go well around here for us Jayhawks. For a "Kid" turning 40 I used my purple ones. (She was a Kansas State Wildcat graduate) Pink ones can be bubble gum. I thought about white ones (Dan G.) but went with Marshmellowsssssssss. Lately I have been playing with the Nielsen(sic?) sculptured rabbits..but haven't put them in the "real shows yet". Since I use ear plugs, I have considered using them in a routine. (mine not Jay S's.) Yesterday at a middle school assembly I could have used them.(ear plugs) The assembly called "Be the Change" was a multi media presentation using music videos. LOUD is putting it mildly. These type assemblies are interesting for students but a bit loud for this nearly normal counselor/magician. Getting a bit sweaty...I need to sponge off.................. harri9s (the 9 is silent)

I always do my sponge ball routine early in my children's show. A long time ago I was taking private lessons from Frank Garcia and it's a routine he taught me. The sponge ball routine will from time to time serve a special function in my show. If at the start of the show I get a sense that there is an older child in the audience that is prone to being either skeptical or a borderline heckler. I will bring that child up. When the rest of the kids see that this child has been totally fooled and more importantly ENTERTAINED and ENGAGED by the magician--it reinforces my connection with the entire audience and turns a potential skeptic into a fan.

I do this every show - people love it. I adapted the routine in Mark Wilson's book (which is very good).

I have worked the local Renaissance Festival the past six years and the standard spongeball routine is my go to trick when I see kids approaching. Sunday I ONLY did the transpo in their hand because once I did it once, all the kids put their hands on my table so I could do it in their hands.
Forgive me if this has been addressed but does anyone have any good tips to keep them from blowing away? |

I stopped using sponge balls in my shows years ago. I know what comes to a persons mind when they in up with two balls in their hand. Plus one time when I mentioned two balls appeared in the volunteer's hand, the school students were laughing and saying "oohhhh". That is why I use sponge rabbits now. There is nothing to be careful of saying when using rabbits.

I have been using rabbit for years. I like using rabbits more for a few reasons. One reasons is because they will not roll off the table. Another reason is because I am the only magician using rabbits in my area. Another reason is because the rabbits (5") are bigger. Another reason is because I can bend my elbow as much as I want without any pain. If ain't broken, don't try to fix it (again).

I have done a few short kid shows recently. One was a a Halloween party and the other was as the "mystery reader" (they have a parent show up every Friday to read to the kids) in my daughter's school class. Both times the sponge balls were the hit. The effect got the biggest reactions and the kids kept asking me to do the red ball trick again. I combined it with D'Lite and it went over very well. I am sold on sponge balls! Eugene Burger says he has a love/hate relationship with them. He hates the trick at times but can't stop doing it because too many people love sponge balls!
