I saw the Byrd and Coats' Encyclopedia of Pickpocketing, at Hocus-Pocus (a 4 DVD set).
Do you know something about it ?

Has anyone viewed the recent released, Encyclopedia of Pickpocketing series, by James Coats and Nicholas Byrd?
I would like to read an objective review of this material. Can anyone provide such a review or provide a link to one of the magazines that contains a review? Many thanks.

I have...
Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

I don't particularly enjoy Coat's and Byrd's style. They lack performance skill, and after seeing folks like Chappy Brazil perform....Coats is nothing.

Astinus,
Thanks for responding. I'm more interested in expanding my knowledge of pickpocketing and put-pocketing methods rather than seeing great performances. Though great performances (such was Chappy's, and is Freeman's)are always a joy and inspiration to see. Have you viewed this latest Encyclopedia of Pickpocketing series? If so,please make comment(s)on the clarity of explanations and methods contained in each volume. Many thanks.

I bought and viewed Encyclopedia of Pickpocketing Volume 2 yesterday.
I hope this quick/brief review is of some help to those pondering the worth of this new release. I felt that the presentation of Coats and Byrd was very straightforward. It clearly explained methods and techniques for the real world. However, please note that Entertainers must be (or become) very comfortable with touching and moving their volunteers around on stage. But this is required of most pickpocket routines. Production was low budget, and there are no clips of performing pickpocketing on stage in a theatrical setting. "Live" demonstrations are done on unsuspecting volunteers that seem to be comprised of college students walking around on campus. Many of these volunteers are dressed very casually (ie. cargo shorts/pants)but Coats and Byrd show many techniques by using each other as the mock volunteer and they do wear jackets for their demo. I did appreciate the "chemistry" and counter balance of personalities between Coats and Byrd. And found them to be "likeable" and earnest in their desire to transmit their knowledge to the uninitiated, or budding entertainer/pickpocket. I Would recommend Volume two for those that already have the "watch steal" in their repertoire, or are curious to learn what they might learn "after" becoming accomplished at the watch steal. Although I was already familiar with the "Ricky Dunn" steals, they are great steals and it's still always helpful to see others demonstrate them. Stealing the Show, by James Freeman, is another new DVD release that has received positive review from Michael Close (Magic Magazine October 2004). Michael points out however, that Picking Pockets is not for the faint of heart, and he admits that he, personally, would not feel at ease "stealing" someone's watch (ie. what if... when you return the knock off Rolex, the volunteer cries that his was a "real" Rolex, and that he (the volunteer) wants the real one back now!")...now there's a great topic for a new pickpocketing thread! Michael suggests that the Freeman's DVD is well made and he applauds Freeman for bringing up the important issue of liability insurance and the importance of this for the professional entertainer/pickpocket. I have viewed Freeman's older video, "How to Pick a Pocket or Two", and found it very instructive, and Freeman's personality very pleasing. It seems that his latest DVD is worth viewing (and purchasing) as well.
