Can anybody recommend some good sources for learning the silk fountain, especially the folds? I prefer books if possible, but would like recommendations on video also.
Thanks very much! Impossible Man |

Jeff McBride's Magic on Stage Video/DVDs have it, as does Duane Laflin's Silk Fountain DVD. I believe in a prior post someone mentioned that you can also find it in one of the Rice volumes. If you do a search for Silk Fountain it should come up.

There are a few references to Silk Fountains in the Encyclopedia of Silk Magic (specifically volumes 3 and 4). However, I don't think the methods of folding are explained as well as in the videos recommended by Paul (two of my favorites). There is one other video reference I would like to make and that is Paul Diamond's "Symphonette in Silk" (Lessons in Magic with Paul Diamond volume 10). He not only covers the Fountain of Silks but also producing a silk from the fingertips, silk color change, use of the Stillwell Handkerchief Ball, and producing a 100 foot streamer from a coke can.
Take care ! Jimmy

The folds are the key to the effectiveness of this trick. I'm a real Rice fan but Lucy (my wife and "silk folder") learned best from Jeff McBride's video. A good folding job is a good investment in the show. Take your time.

When I got my fountain, I had not yet received the Laflin DVD, which includes a whole silk routine climaxing with the fountain, but just started folding the way it made sense to me, starting at the inside silk, fold diagonal corners to the center, and then the other set, and then fold each of them again. And go through all of the layers that way. Obviously if you have a final load of a banner, or larger silk (I do a 36 inch final) you need to put that into the first layer.
Anyway, once I got the Laflin DVD, he showed that same way of folding, but I think there is a lot more on that DVD that makes it appealing. BroDavid

Bob is correct. Take your time. If I can, I fold my fountain up two or three days ahead of time so it opens up slower.

Years ago Tannens sold the fountain of silks with a plastic tube that you placed under the silks before you started to fold them. As each layer was folded you pushed the load slightly into the tube to keep it from unfolding before you were set.

Yet you fold it 2 days ahead of time. Yes this slows the action down but doesn't it crease up the silks fearsomely? How do you then smooth out the fountain. Peter |

The wrinkle do not show much or matter in the case of a silk fountain. They actual add to depth of the silk on stage in this case. It is all unfolding so no one sees the wrinkles anyway. I use 8 momme silks in my fountain so it has a little more spring to it. When you do not have the luxury of presetting further ahead use thinnner silks. They will have less spring to it. If loading it the day of a show works for you, go with it. I never say my way is only way. But try it once, film it and see if there is a difference.
The fountain that John spoke of was taught by Peter White in his lecture and it a neat way to do it though the load is not as big. I believe it is explained in his videos.

Bro David talks about butting finale in first layer. What about a dove, or a really large flag on a pole? wouldn't they have to be b--- l--ds? Bruce

Bruce,
They don't have to be but you can get away with murder with all that cover. I even steal loads from Lucy and the table. Bob Magic By Sander |

I noticed Paul Diamond was mentioned in this thread. I graduated high school in 1970 in Melbourne, Fla. Later that fall I attended The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale on E. Las Olas Blvd. close to Hwy.A1A on the beach. I used to frequent Paul's magic shop on N. Federal Hwy. and spend all my spare money there, buying magic tricks mainly card and coin effects. I remember how fantastic he was with cards and coins and how nice he was to me back then. I'd spend hours in that old shop and he would take me in the back and show me all his new stuff and ideas. He always had a cigar in his mouth and told me not to smoke because it was a bad habit. He did some excellent magic with cigars though. I heard thru Harry Allen of Daytona Magic that he is confined to a wheelchair now and does'nt get around much these days. Boy what memories, those where truly magical times back then! Has anyone seen or heard from Paul lately? I'd like to know please. He probably would'nt remember me, but I'll never forget him... he played a huge role in my study of magic. He is a great man.

I still get emails once and awhile from him. His health is not the best.
But I too have very fond memories of Paul.
