I like to end with: " Again I am very sorry sir, I had no idea she was your daughter. And to everyone else, the burns will heal."
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

I heard a comedian onetime say....
"Thank you and have a good night, and If you've been drinking - please stay off the road as much as possible, so drive home twice as fast". |

You have been a great audience. My name is Danny T. Give yourselves a standing ovation...Yes!
Magic is a dream in which we put ourselves in the fantasy of the reality that surrounds us. It's a wishful thinking that all human kind posses. It's life itself. And I for one believe in it.

"Thank you very much, once again my name is Aaron Aptaker, and I'm going to go make an omelet. Good night" (bow)
So you don't think I'm crazy, my finale is Silk To Egg, and I have just cracked the egg into the shotglass. I hold it up in a toast to the audience and take a bow. I have no problem with the thank you's to the audience/hosts, or wishing people goodnight... I do those in my false ending. Throughout the show I build up that if the audience has fun.... at the end of the show I will teach them a great trick. I do a false ending with all of these formalities and when the audience comments that they didn't learn a trick, I tell them I had completely forgotten (jokingly) and I "teach" them the vanishing silk trick... which ends up being the Silk To Egg. A couple of things to think about with your closer... 1) It is the last impression the audience will ahve of you. 2) The line should not be outside of your character... the audience gasps when they see the egg then I hit them with one last joke... the omelet line serves my character very well, and helps establish a lasting image in my audiences mind. The closing line does not have to be... ok the show is over now go home. It can be a tie in for your whole show. 3) It is generally a good idea to state your name in your closing line. There is the old saying that they won't remember who you are but they'll remember what you did... we can at least try to have them remember who we are. 4) In theater a curtain call is not to indulge the performer. This is why you lower your head when taking a bow. You are thanking your audience. Cliffg37 was spot on with this. Not only is bowing a humble way to thank your audience, it is the universal sign that either people should be clapping or a king has just entered the room... assuming you don't work palaces the audience will know to clap and you will increase your applause. There are some good lines above but the most important thing is to create a line that suits you. Mr. Palmer has a great closing line, however I am a teenage magician... the line would be strange coming from me... and wouldn't suit where I work. Don't use a line because someone else gets a laugh with it. Hope there are some bits of usable info in there. Once again I'm Aaron Aptaker and I"m going to go make an omelet. Good Night! |

For my show, I actually don't have a true closing line. I deliver my closing line before the final effect, thus leaving my audience on a climax. Before I perform my last effect, I say "Ladies and gentlemen, this is my final presentation, if you have enjoyed my performance, and if it is successful, I would thank you to erupt in outrageous applause." Following the effect, I often throw in "thank you"s, and "come again"s, and if I'm on an open hat agreement, I often say "give me money", which usually gets a pretty good laugh.

After I bow, I always end by saying, “Thank you my name is … enjoy the rest of your evening at (Whatever venue you are performing at). This gives a plug for the guy that hired you and gives kind of a coda to your performance.

"Thank you for opening your imgination which made all these magical mysteries possible. It wouldn't have worked without you. Give yourselves a well deserved round of applause" (joining hand and bowing as if the applause where for you: I'm not that important so I don't have to be modest)
My experience is that audiences applaud lauder for celebrating themselves than to show consideration for the best performers in any art. Later on, in their memories, they credit the quality of the performer and of his performance in accordance with the intensity of the applause... Thus Bill's closer is showing great experience...

At the end of my show I always bring out my assistants one by one, announce their name's one more time, and my sound man as well, thanking them for their help, and get the crowd to give them a round of applause. Then I announce that we want to thank them for being such a wonderful audience, and we give them a round of applause, which always gets the crowd applauding back, Thank them for coming, and wish them a happy and safe evening.

I have updated my closing line to:
Ladies and Gentlemen, that concludes my performance tonight. However, let me leave you with the words of Arthur Eddington who said, “Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we CAN imagine.” Good Night. |

Lawrence O Inner circle French Riviera 6811 Posts |
Eddington's phrase is a phrase that I use as a transition between a first and a second trick in my close up act. I found it great not so much as a final conclusion but as an early challenge for them to stretch their imagination further and further along the act. I must admit that I'm not crediting Eddington for it (to keep the rhythm) and I sprinkle similar invitation to the audience for them to open their imagination.
I'm not saying that it shold be done like that. I was just reconsidering in my head when reading that a sentence that I had perceived as some form of opener is used by another seasoned performer as a closer. There is more than one way to skin a cat...

There was a time when I ended my show with a flagstaff and flag production. My accompanist would play "Grand Old Flag," and I would thank the audience, and end with -- "and if you don't applaud, we will take your names and turn you in to the John Birch Society."

I end by thanking the audience and then leave them with either of these thoughts:
“Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present." (A shortened version of the Alice Morse Earle quote.) And another that gets a good chuckle; I would like to leave you with some wisdom my mother gave me when I was little…. “Son before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes.” (I think that’s a Jack Handey) |
