Anyone know what Valentino is up to right now? Where/if he is working? Curious to know what has become of him....
What was his career like and what kind of work did he do before the mask? Thanks! |

The man (I use that term loosely) did several shows for the Fox TV Network revealing how different effects were performed, many in the repertoires of working magicians and illusionists, causing resulting changes in many shows. It was one of the most vile exhibitions I've ever seen. What he revealed to the lay public was unforgivable. People can also buy and rent the exposes on video. He is the lowest type of magician. All for a selfish buck. If I ever get to meet him....well, you know.

Please don’t take this post as defending his actions.
But as long as the name was brought up I want to ask, would anyone have done this if asked? The way I hear it they would have done it anyway with an actor or dancer who would not have known any better. They could buy DVD's to learn all the secrets they want and do it for less than they paid Valentino. So I wonder, would all of you honestly say no? Just for discussion, please don’t read into it that I am approving. |

Yes, I would say no. I would not be held responsible for exposing the Art which I cherish.

No! Is the only acceptable answer! I'd tell Fox to bag the idea. Years later people will still be bad mouthing Fox for doing this....and they are!

As said earlier they could get all the secrets they wanted anyway.Spend a few hours on the net and you can learn anything you want.
If a exposure show is gonna be made its going to be made if it has a magician to front it or not. The street magic special and the other one which showed blaines frozen in ice stunt were performed by actors not magicians. That was obvious. Valentino presented the first lot but at the same time look at what he revealed. All old and out of date stuff.I am pretty sure he controlled what was gonna be revealed. OK, the linking rings is still going but the lay audiance are gonna assume there is a gap in the ring anyway. Most magicians hand out the rings or perform a series of sleights which show that the rings are ungaffed. You can still perform these things that were exposed but they will either need a little tweaking or a lot more skill to perform. There is an interview with Derek dingle online where he discusses the cig through coin and how he fooled someone with it who JUST bought it and new how it worked. I cringe when I see magicians causing an uproar about exposure in the media. Remember that Houdini exhibit.Knowone would have known about it until magicians started going on the news and primetime tv protesting about it. Now everyone is gonna go to see what the fuss is all about. The only people who would of went before would probably be magicians anyway.

Bottom line: Exposure is Bad.
Bottom line: Magicians shouldn't tip secrets to the public. Bottom line: Magicians who do ought to be ostracized from the community. There is no good reason to make excuses for magicians take part in exposure. |

Hi briansmagic:
You asked what his career was like before the mask. I had a chance to see him several times, and he was very good. He made the finals of one of the New York Magic Symposium Stage Magic Contests. He did a dove, silk, and candle act (maybe some cards too). I remember being very impressed when I saw him - I think it was in the mid 1980's. I also saw him in Vegas in one of the review shows. Too bad he had to do the Fox Shows. Ron |

You know, I've been wondering about this for some time...
When Val unmasked himself at the end of the last show, were magicians in general surprised to find out who he was? I have to admit, I had never even heard of him before the shows, but I was pitching Svengalis at the time and Val's name was flying around my workplace from the very first episode (Hackmonkey will remember this, if he's around). There wasn't even any speculation about it being anyone else, as far as I can remember. So, was it a surprise to anyone? Cheers, Cy. |

I agree with MrCyNic, when the first episode aired I remember hearing Valention's name mentioned quite often in the magic circle. With each new episode the name seemed to become more and more upfront, for lack of a better word.
Just as an aside, Houdini used to publish methods of performing his escapes to the public. It was said he did this not only to make his act seem "better" than other magician's acts, but also to "lay claim" that he was the one who invented them or was the first to perform in this way. Just thought it fit in a post about magicians consciecly(sp) revealing secrets. Thank You Shawn

A little off topic but does anyone know who the other "masked magician" in the "Street Magic Exposed" was? I've heard of Valentino as the masked magician but who was the di!do who exposed Dr. Daleys last trick, resurection of a fly, rising card, a very impractical variation of psychokinetic time, etc..?

It was an actor. Not a magician, you can tell by the way he handled the props and people.
