I was asked by a client to do something to produce goldfish at an upcoming show. Not being a big fan of goldfish I'm looking for something not too expensive that will fit the bill. I came across a bunch of effects at Hocus including this one. Anyone have this or have any thoughts on it? Thanks.

Including which one? You didn't include a link.
If you wear a jacket and want to produce a small bowl with a live goldfish inside, consider Little Fishy by Diamond Jim Tyler. Larry D. |

Thanks Larry. The Fantastic Fishbowl Production is on Hocus Pocus' site and you can see a video of it at Dick Barry's site. http://www.dickbarrymagic.com

I want Little Fishy but I ordered it from Hocus Pocus and they told me that Diamond Jim stopped making it and they could no longer sell it. Anyone have one they wanna get rid of?? Or can put me in touch with Diamond Jim to get one?? |

Likewise, Diamond Jim's site says they are out of stock.

I just called Barry's Magic Shop and he has five of the Little Fishy in stock (he had six but I asked him to hold one for me). You can contact Barry or Sue at the shop at 301-933-0373. Tell them Larry sent you.

You may also want to consider the Aldini Bowl Production. I've used this for years with great response. In effect, the magician appears holding a little tray. The tray is covered with a cloth and on top of the cloth is a cone shaped cover. The cover is removed and shown to prove that there is nothing hidden within it and that there is nothing on the tray.
The cover is placed back on top of the cloth and then the whole tray is placed on any table that is convenient. The cloth is removed and you can clearly see underneath the tray. Immediatly, the magician starts to produce silks and flowers from within the cone resting on the tray. Remember, the cone and tray had just been shown empty. As a finale, the magician removes the cone from the tray to reveal a full bowl of fish. This effect can be done surrounded, but it is intended as either a stage or platform effect. I think this effect may be available at Hocus-Pocus or Stevens Magic.

How about just producing a big glass of water with a goldfish in it. Eg. OSterlind style (DVD vol 4) or Barrie Richardson style (book: Theatre of mind) or Flicking Fingers style (DVD "the Movie") or Eugene Burger style (Cabaret magic). None of the mentioned produce a goldfish, but they do produce a glas of water/juice whatever and you can easilly insert a gold fish.
Remember: consider the well being of the animal before you do it. |

I highly recommend the "Modern Water Bowl" sold and manufactured by Abbott's. This is the method used by Al Baker which he called the "Naomi" bowl prodcution (after his dauther).
Contact Abbott's at 1-800-92-MAGIC. Best, Gabe Fajuri |

I realize this thread is very old but it has comments on everything but the thread topic and I would appreciate a review of the Fantastic Fishbowl Production from anyone that actually has it. Thanks for any info you care to share.

I was extremely disappointed with this. Had I seen the video of the product before purchase ( http://www.dickbarrymagic.com/Videos/fantasticfb.rm) then I definately would not have bought it.
The method is very old and I do not understand how any one can claim it as being their own? |

I checked out the video and had the same thoughts, Lee. However, I also checked out his singing birdcage production and I have to say, using the same principle, it played a lot stronger.
As to how Dick could take credit, it is a different production using an old subterfuge. I have no problem with his taking credit. It would be like saying that two tricks using a pass are the same. Not necessarily. The two are packaged differently.

Thank you Steven Steele.
In that light I understand, but I only wish I had seen the video before purchasing! |

Lee,
I wouldn't be too hard on Dick. While the video certainly is lacking, the method has been used by many pros, Slydini for one. Properly handled and routined, it can kill. Before you toss it in the drawer, I would suggest you work with it and explore its possibilites. You may come up with a better handling for your own use. If you do, you will be much more happy with the routine and engage your audience so much more.

Steven and Lee . . . Just to reply to some of the comments rea my Fish Bowl Production. I have never taken credit for the principal used in this effect. It is the old Chinese Egg Bag idea, which is a very very old principal. My only addition is using a fish bowl instead of an egg. I first came out with the Singing Bird/Cage Production using the same principal. It has been a big seller for me and I must agree that I personally like it better than the Fish Bowl Production. Lee, if you bought the trick directly from me and think that you didn't get your money's worth send it back for a full refund. I stand by my magic. My name in this business is more important to me than selling you a trick, especially if you didn't like it. If you have any questions or comments please e-mail me direct at: dickbarrymagic@aol.com
