I am asking this question here because I would use it w/ Mis-Made Flag.
Is anyone familar with this appering flag pole? Will it hold up or does it need to be babied? How good is the flag it comes with? http://www.misdirections.com/stage.html "Flag Staff Production w/American Flag Just think about it: At the end of your performance produce a GIANT U.S. Flag for the finale! Flag measures 30" x 60" Staff is chrome plated Folded up 10" by 3/4" Open: Staff is four (4) feet long with 30" x 60" flag hanging from it. $ 70.00 "

I've seen it done about 25 to 26 years ago it turned out pretty good for a reaction.

Hi:
The flagstaff production is terrific, but it all depends on the staff. The one Misdirections sells looks like it is an Indian-made version, which may or may not be a good thing. I've seen some nice things from India, but most of it is junk. There are other makers of flagstaffs. Abbott's sells a brass-made model which has been the industry-standard for a long time (Silk King Studios used to sell the Abbott's flagstaff with their own silks). There are also Japanese made flagstaffs that are made from some type poly-material. I saw one at a convention, and is was very quiet when it opened. So, I think I would see if the dealer would allow a return if you don't like it before buying the one from Misdirections. Ron |

You're right, probably made in India.
I think that this is the same model that Duane Laflin sells. I purchased 2 from Duane, but with multi-color flags instead of American flags (changed the price). Production Flagstaffs from Laflin Magic,......ailable. I use them now and then. One of the rings / flag eyelets came loose (not soldered / welded properly), and sometimes they jam up when trying to pack them down (but that could be my fault ). Have almost no problems with them working during the show. Overall, I am EXTREMELY happy with the response they get. Here's a photo of my wife and I performing our dual flagstaffs in a show: - Donald

I used flagstaff for years and make silks to fit them.
I would stay away from the India models unless you only intended to do it once or twice a year. Abbott's makes a very good flagstaff that has proven itself overtime. Sometimes they show up used on ebay at a lower price. But even at full price, buy it once and you are done. General Grant also makes a very good staff. It is about the same price as Abbott's. The Japanese (mikame) staffs are made of a polly carbon material that is very light. That also means your silk must be very light. Which means the silk will wear out quickly. They are not that cheap either. By the way, you do a flag staff, sew a ribbon along the edge you will attach to the staff. It will take a lot of the strain off the silk and keep it from ripping the weave out of the silk. I make by multicolor flagstaff silks with a ribbon turned inside the silk before it is dyed so the ribbon is invisble. I may have some used Abbott staffs with silk in inventory. PM if you are looking for one. But a flagstaff always gets a very good reaction with an audience.

Another nice thing about the Abbott's staff is the outer-most section is painted to look like a wand. I used to do the very-easy Neil Foster idea of having the staff sitting in my top hat. It looks just like a wand propped up and sitting in the hat.

Only the large flagstaff is painted to look like a wand. It is quite big as it will take a 45" x 90" silk.

I have an India model and I have had to repair it a couple of times. I don't use it that often but if I did, I would certainly try to get a better one. I used epoxy to glue back a broken eye and the ball thing at the tip. The tip flew off once in a show and slammed into a wall. Luckily it didn't hit anyone and it went un-noticed except for the thud on the wall. I now have epoxy on all the eyes and anything that could come loose. I haven't had any problems since, but I am cautious and nerveous when I use it. I hope to get a good one someday.

Does anyone know where to get a Canadian type flag staff production? if not, what would be the best type of staff to buy?
Thanks |

I think you would just buy the flag pole and get a Canadian flag silk to go on it.

I have toyed with the idea of making some up if there is an interest.

The set I use in my show was custom made locally, but I did not get one made for the appearing flagpole.
That reminds me, Richard, I still need to send you my script for that routine with the Canadian flag that we discussed some time ago. Oops! Sorry about that. - Donald
