Any ideas what sort of effects I could do for a charity gig at a big city childrens hospital? All my sort of stuff is emotional impact stuff.
Thanks as always NOT |

I think your greatest resource in this area is Brother Shadow and the material he's written on the subject. He did bizarre magic for children as a magician in a state park for over a decade.
His book, The Art of Storytelling Magic, is available from him or his alter ego, Carl Herron. His email address is broshad2aol.com I'm sure you already know that with a little thought, just about anything can be wrapped in a strong, fascinating story. It doesn't have to be bloody, gory, scary, or shocking to be bizarre, after all (as fun as that angle may be, it just isn't appropriate for young children; you can get creepier when they're older). You'll probably find that many of the effects you already do are okay, with some story modifications.

Mark Strivings has "Mark Stivings Goes to Daycare" and it is excellent as is all of Marks stuff. It's available from Brian Flora or directly from Mark himself.
Ditto on Brother Shadow's material. Superb.
That's MISTER Swami Bill to you.

Run Children Run! - Variation on the Run Rabbit Run! effect but used with children and a monster where in the end you show a fat satisfied monster picking his teeth with a leg bone. Use your Card Duck with the Tarot Deck instead of the regular one. Cut and Restored intestines There's few to get you started.... From the Dark Side, Doug

Todd Robbins has some great "Kid Show" effects in one issue of the New Invocation. Some very good ideas for performing Magic for Children.

Try and Harry Potter-ise some of the bizarre stuff you do..make sure good wins over evil.
When I was setting up in a book shop for a show for a Potter book launch I was putting out some mini skull candleholders and some young girls commented it looked "Way cool". Because of Potter and Lord of the Rings one can have a darker edge to the kids stuff, just don't aim to give them nightmares!:) Paul. |
