Hi,
I used to do only one hypno set that was 1 1/2 hours long. In time I switched it to 2 sets each 45 minutes in length. I found that once people had seen a class act with the first group of people, it was a lot less daunting to go onstage for the second part for others. I also found that my "kill rate" went up drastically in the second set. Once people had seen what I could do and had belief in it, more went up and more went "down". One way I used to defeat terror in my audience and get them to volunteer was to use humour to such an over the top degree that they were laughing at how absurd thier fears were before I even invited them up. i.e., "I don't turn people into chickens anymore". "The last person I turned into a chicken left the club and was immediately snatched up and deep fryed by a polular fast food chain". "Yes, they were VERY TASTY, but still,... what a tragedy". Sound stupid? It is. But it works. Confront the fears in a non serious and comical way and people will begin to laugh at being afraid. It's a natural progression. Another of my tricks was to state that all hypnosis is self hypnosis, I have no power over you, and I am nothing more that a "cruise director". I also commonly would state that I personally did not believe in hypnosis as defined by the medical profession (which I do not). Once people started to look at me as a likeable guy who was not trying "to be more" than they were, everything fell into place. It is a disarming approach, but one the audience percieves as honest. This is why it worked for me. Once you removed the percieved "domination of my mind over yours" and instead instilled a "we are all in this together cooperation" sort of approach, you generally have no trouble getting people up. As a last resort, I used a mass group test WHILE people were still in the audience. They felt more comfortable surrounded by friends so why not start it there? Worked for me. Cheers, Steve Santini |

Yet another great thread here at the magic Café. I have started to teach myself hypnotism. I have two great little books,
Practical Hypnotism by Ed Woolf Entertaining with hypnotism by Calostro. (If any one else has these I would like to hear what you think of them). I have had only ONE practice session thus far and this was one my wife! No good results as yet but I will continue to try.....All the above advice is great and thank you all very much.. Kev |

I am afraid I do not know.
I usually post to another area of The Café and these few posts have been the extent of my seeking out hypno forums. I only performed it; I never really looked to talk about it! It seems that is all changing now... Maybe I should write a manuscript detailing my induction and performing experiences. If there is any interest I may consider it. Cheers, Steve Santini |

Hypnotise your friends and family????
Forget it. It ain't gonna work. The key to hypnotising people is for the subjects to think you are an expert and have been doing it for years. Your friends and family know perfectly well that you don't know what you are doing. The earlier advice is perfectly sound. Practice to the tables and chairs at home. Practice and practice the script until you are sick of it. Assume the imaginary people are going to do as you want. That is all you can do at the moment. It is most important to get your patter right and you must appear as if you are an expert who has been doing it for years and years. On no account should you even hint to your audience that you are inexperienced. If you let out that little secret you are doomed. Sooner or later you are going to have to go on stage and try it. I do not recommend as most of the books do that you should try it out on individuals before you go on stage. I believe that is the slow method and can actually retard your progress. Now you are going to have to have a brass neck to just go out on stage and do it. It will take the nerve of the devil. Do the show for free or for a nominal sum to take the pressure off you. I personally do not believe anybody should attempt stage hypnosis unless they have been a performer of some sort and the stage is their second home. This is no entertainment art for the tyro who has had limited stage experience. You are just going to have to go out there and die a death until the happy day comes when you can do it. You will be tempted to use stooges when you first start. Don't. Just go out there, stare the audience in the face and do it. If it dies then go back and do it again some other time. If it still dies then go back again. And again. And again. One day the happy moment will come when everyone is dancing to your tune. It will be a moment of great joy for you. Be aware that it takes a lot of guts. Many magicians have tried it and just couldn't hack it. |

I'm also in the learning phases in the realm of hypnotism. What my concerns are even before thinking of practicing on people, are the major concerns of abreactions. I'm still researching all I can on all the negative abreactions that may occur. If any experienced hypnotists here can elaborate on some ways of solving abreactions, such as what type of suggestions to give, may you please do so?
Thanks Lance

Or where there are under 50 people attending. Sure you can sometimes pull something out of these situations but I just wouldn't bother. Thats where a good mental act can save you. You just tell them there aren't enough for a hypno show and launch into the mental show.. If you can't get into the good venues just do enough to make sure you get paid.. |

Shrink, I agree 100% I always carry my mental act with me, its one extra little case so there is no harm at all.
An advantage of waiting for the seats to fill of course is that the peopel who do participate are already understanding that you are to be obayed and they are into a pettern of responding to you. The required respect is gained, which as we know is essential. Just a few thoughts, Kennedy

A lot of my performances are quite small as I perform most in peoples homes these days, I do psychic evenings for parties of 20 people up words, I have done weddings and house warmings also, I work this way as I enjoy it most and usually end up with more clients out of every performance, not to mention getting to know the clients and audience members on a much warmer friendly level.
I guess having started this way in the early days I developed some of the most surefire methods of getting people to volinteer, I know that working with small groups can be suicide but I have learned how to alter conditions in my favour. I did pubs for a while but just didn't like the scene. H.W

When I was learning Hypnosis 10 years ago, I had a similar problem.
I found the best way to practice, was to ask friends to help me learn guided visualisation/meditation. Then we would effectively both hypnotise ourselves with me saying the words. Once they and I felt comfortable with this, we move on to hypnosis, looking at goalsetting, smoking cessation, etc. after working with a number of friends and family,I then started to perform mentalism parties, using NLP, leading on to creating a deep sense of connection/synchronicity, which was basically hypnosis. This led on to performing Hypnosis shows. I would also recommend you attending some of the many hypnosis and NLP practice Groups that run regularly around the UK. http://www.nlp-london.com is a good one, and I'm actually presenting at it next Thursday. Good luck on your journey Regards Marc |

I have been studying and practising hypnosis for the past 2 years.
I began, practising on my girlfriend and friends and familly of course. I've learnt that the best way to do this is to not actually hypnotise them or at least say that's what your doing. You tell them especially when they are stressed, that you can do a guided relaxtion thing with them. simple...everybody wants to relax..explain how just by talking to them and giving them suggestions you can have them so relaxed that their muscles will droop and they will feel like the've had an entire nights sleep. HECK I've done this to my grandma. If you have a good relaxtion induction/script you never need to mention the word TRANCE or Hypnosis, and it's a naturall and very powerfull way to induce a deep state of hypnosis without them even realising it. ONce you have them so relaxed / in trance....you can test out some basic suggestions. All this is well documented in basic books from the library or several books which have been recomended 4 thousand times on this very site. After the've woken up...you can then decide to say well you were actually in TRANCE. Thus breaking all their fears...as now the've done it....and to do it again..of course it's allways much faster and easy...because you've suggested that it will. cheerio.... |
