Hi folks,
Found a new giveaway item here in Vancouver (Canada,eh?) I can give to volunteers (say, 7 years and up, as recommended by the manufacturer)(heck, even my wife and 12 year old daughter get a kick out of throwing it around) during my family shows. It's a $1.00 item (in dollar stores) called "Smash Tomato", which is a sticky, squeezable water ball that looks just like a "tomato" from a distance. Remember throwing those "sticky hands" against a wall. Well, you can take this tomato and throw it against a door/wall/floor and it looks like, and literally does, flatten out or "gets squashed/smashed". Then, due to its nature, in a few seconds, it reforms by itself, and visibly turns back into its original shape. It's kinda cool. Regards, Ray http://www.raywongmagic.com

Are you using that as a giveaway after doing the Nielsen Vanishing Ketchup bottle? - Donald

HI,
Be warned those type of sticky rubber things have some sort of oil (read the packaging) and will stain Clothes , polished surfaces ext Phillip |

Hey Donald, that's an idea...
and thanks for the warning Phillip. These tomatoes each came individually packaged in a sealed see-thru bag and other than what I described in my first post, had no other warnings whatsoever on the box which held a dozen tomatoes. Ray

Now you can throw tomatoes at the audience, instead of having them always throw them at you!

You're welcome Kyle, and hope others can find these.
I gave a couple away during my last couple of shows, and the kids who received them just love'em (both boys and girls). A lot of the other kids were envious. You are on a roll Donald, and don't forget to add butter! It's hard to find just the right knick-knack in the $1.00-$3.00 range to give volunteers who are 8 years and up. Ray

Thanks for sharing ,Ray, they do sound like cool toys. However giving 8 year olds something made for throwing does sound to me like asking for trouble.

Hmmm, yes, I might reassess the situation, maybe make some followup calls with the moms, and reconsider...
Besides balloon animals, what giveaways do you folks hand out (if anything at all)? Thanks, Ray

If you do a search for give-aways and restrict it to the little darlings you'll find plenty of threads with give away examples. (Either do that or pretend you can't manage it and hope the exceedingly kind and helpfull GreatDonaldD puts up a nice list of links )
A lot of folks get printed there own colouring sheets or simple trick instructions thereby having a give-away with there own details on it. When I was a kid my Mum found a fantastic give-away. Slot together polystyrene and plastic planes. They come in a small flat package and 20 years ago where 12p each, I suspect they'll probably be around the 50p-£1 price now but they sure are cool. We loved them. Sure they're still throwable items but they don't hit anything with enough force to knock anything of a mantlepiece or bring tears to the eye of a toddler. George |

I use several give-away items for kids:
- fortune telling fish - magic wands - magician assistant certificates - coloring flyers All are very cheap and well under a buck and work really well. kids seem to really enjoy them and my marketing information is on each one of them. Always search flea markets and dollar stores. You can often find some great items if you keep your eyes open. Another idea is to wait till AFTER Halloween is over. The stores are basically giving away stuff that might be cool for your performances or even as give away items. It is certainly worh checking out. Kyle

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate the links and words of advice!
I'm going to look into more promo-related prizes that would be suitable for a routine I do for 8-11 year olds. In the routine, I specifically mention to the volunteer that they get a special PRIZE "IF" they follow my instructions correctly during the course of the routine (so it better be a good prize... as they usually WIN!) I just want to make sure they'll love the prize. Best regards, Ray
