As a mentalist who makes no claims but doesn't want people to think any kind of supernatural power is involved or that it's all NLP or whatever how do you answer the following question:
"How did you first learn you could do this?" or "When did you realize that you could do this?" Jonathan Grant |

"There are members of my family that say that my great aunt could do some of this too. I didn't know her. She died just before I was born."
"I spent some time alone in the bush when I was younger. I wanted to clear my head and focus my energies. It is amazing what happens when you do something like that." "Well, you know of stories that people tell of going up to a locked door and turning the handle and it opened. (Getting goose bumps when I say it) That happened to me once when I was a kid. After that, you just start noticing things." "The mind is truly amazing. I guess as I grew older, I just became more self aware. I guess we all do. Anyway I realized that there were things that I wasn't focusing enough on." "Some people say that learning is opening gateways. It seems that my efforts to understand things... helped me to develop these skills." "When I was 7, my cat scratched me. It took a long time for it to heal. It was about then that I began to understand that I could do some of these things." "That's a good question. I guess all of life is a learning curve. It will be interesting to see where this progresses." "It came to me during a fog storm in the Alps when my iguana overheated. I was standing there trying to wave down passing cruise missiles when a chain smoking kangaroo somersaulted by looking for a lightening bolt that he had misplaced. I swallowed a couple of tarantulas and suddenly it came to me. A brilliant light flashed between my two front teeth and I had this revelation... God is Velcro." Cheers - El Lamo
Life is a system of circumstance presented coincidently in an illusory way.

I love the approach of playing the emphasis on the spectator.
"wow you sent the image of that card to me perfectly" "you must have amazing powers because the image just came straight into my mind" and so on. The beauty of this tactic is that the spectator feels great at the time because your complimenting them. later after the show they think to themselves hang on I didn't do anything. and then subconsciously they realise that it was actualy..... this way you should never be asked these questions. Good point lawrencetreagus, when ever I do a 'mental influence' styled effect I say something along the lines of, 'Your going to read my mind.......and with my help, you should be able to tell me what card/letter/word/etc. I'm thinking of.'
But back to the original queston.... I would allways explain that its not a 'gift' I was born with, but then again were all born with the potential to do what I do. It took a long time for me to get this good.... I might give them some kind of universal expirence they can relate it to such as the classic "when the phone rings and you know who it is without even picking it up" but I would follow it up with a rough scientific explenation,E.G. "...perhaps your subconsious recalled that that person useally calls on that day, around that time or your concious mind forgot that they said theyed ring but you subconcious mind didn't. Its your intuition really, which is basicly a 'subconcious memory', it rememebers everyting, even if you don't". Hope that helps, Alex.

I usually say it's just entertainment and if they push the issue I tell them I have no powers, that it's just something I like to do for entertainment. Most people don't push the issue and really believe I can do some amazing and very weird things. Because I do mentalism and psychic entertainment stuff, some people really think I'm weird and some have asked me to help them, so I don't like letting the really affected think I'm the real thing.

I tell them that I started studying how to do this about 35 years ago and that it's an ongoing thing for me. This is true, I just don't tell them what I study. if they press it, I tell them that I read a lot about psychic phenomena, influence and the like. I have a small reading list if they are truly interested - all of which is scientific as all get-out and boring to the max.
This way, if I meet them again, they are even more impressed that I was able to wade through all of that material. Lee Darrow, C.H.

Any chance you'd be willing to share the reading list with topics?
I have a couple text on things that are "real magic", but not much scientific research. |
