Hi Nick, I'd imagine it started as a protective messure, then got out of hand. The barmy rule brigade stepped in and took it out of proportion.

There's a big difference between a parent taking pictures of their kids taking part in a school assembly, and some pervert filming kids at the beach or swimming pool.

I think the main concern over in the UK is the now widespread use of camera phones. It seems most mobile phones (or cell phones) have cameras on them now it is easy to disguise the fact that you are taking a picture or recording a video on them.

I think the phones have to make a "click" noise like the tradional shutter purely for this purpose.

There have been a few cases of people using their phones to take pictures at swimming pools, changing rooms etc.

Very alarming I think!

However, most of our shows at schools are NOT considered public.

I've got no idea of the legalities regarding this, but I'm a bit confused how the press can get away with it. Over the past few years, I've been in the press about a dozen times. All types of events including schools. The last one was about two weeks ago, with about 50 children all sat around me. The Evening Herald photographer, didn't ask any parents permission first as their weren't any there. Do the teachers have a right to say it's OK?

I'm going to phone one of the schools tomorrow to ask permission to have a professional video taken at a christmas show I'm doing for them, for promotional reasons to take to Spain with me when I move. Not sure what they'll say, but I'll let you know.

I spoke to the school today, and they have to ask the parents first. But, so that no child is left out, if any parents say no, their children will be sat in the back corner of the audience and will not be in any of the promo video.

Yep that's the law Billy, we have to sign letters saying if we wish for our photo's to be used in school stuff eg brochures and films. I haven't signed yet pictures of me are round the school! (I don't mind because it's free advertsiment Smile although it gets me no work!) also my picture is in the performing arts brochure!

PS Kyle what did you think of the marketing for entertainers? I didn't really find it useful.

Many schools do the opposite. Rather than contend with hundeds of documents, they ask that parents sign and return if they expressly forbid having pictures taken/used. From what I understand, very few get returned.

I do mainly festivals and fair events and always video tape and have a photographer taking pics of my performances. Because it is a public event, it is legal for me to do so and I get some great shots for my website as well as for publicity stuff.

If I want a close-up of a kid or of me with a kid, I always ask first and usually have no problems with it at all since I offer to send the photo to the person as well.

If you want to get permission at a b-day party, all you have to is ask them if it would be ok and that you would love to send them any photos that you take. Usually they love the idea. My wife comes to my shows with me and she can take them as we are performing.
