I think I have told before about a christian person I know that thought magic was done with the power of the devil. I later discovered he had probably watched David Copperfield move a goose from one bucket to another (you know the one where a man dressed in funny clothes enter the scene and "invisibly" move the goose).
Now I have learned that this christian person has managed to see another act done with the help of the devil. He saw someone entering a watertank and before he did that he "mumbled mysterious words to get strength from satan". Do you know who the magician behind that presentation is? Is it David Copperfield again? I would also like to know if you know what the man dressed in funny clothes, and who moved the goose in the first tale was supposed to look like. Someone said he was supposed to look like an american "superhero"? Mikael |

I have no idea who the magician in question might have been, but really, he might have been anybody. Obviously if the goose trick set this person off it could just as easily have been the Hippity Hop Rabbits. (A personal favorite in my mentalism performances, by the way!)

Both Lance Burton and Brett Daniels have done water tank escapes on tv in the past. It could be one of them. As for the guy who moves the goose in DC's show. He only wears a helmet that has wings on it. The helmet of the greek god Murcury. No other outfit is worn.

When it comes to the "processing" of a fundamental extemest from any sect there's no way to convince them one way or the other. Years ago my mother saw me burn a girl alive in a show... even after I showed her the workings and proved the girl was safe, she promoted the idea that I was in league with the Devil, and nearly wouldn't let me in her house for quite some time. Twenty some odd years later she still believes I'm a Satanist because I do Psychic and Bizarre shows... with some people there just is no way to win. BTW... most of this mind-set will support ministers who can "talk to God" and do healings, etc. but let anyone from any other religion do the same exact thing and it is "the work of the devil"... not that there are religious bigots in the world, but it is something to keep in mind. Also bear in mind that yuo are speaking of a religious sect that proudly support the tennet that "Ignorance is bliss" and yet refuse to see that if such were so, we wouldn't have as much war, prejudice and general chaos in the world of today... Take Care!

Penn+Teller do a very funny water tank routine that has been on TV in the UK.
I don't think it is help from Satan that helps Teller survive for so long though. |

Not with respect to Copperfield and those select professionals (and a few gifted semi-professionals) with a great sense of showmanship....but the performance of the majority of magicians--particularly those of the card and/or birthday party genre--aren't actually the work of the devil but rather are just so boring or flat-out awful that the specs feel like they've gone to hell and are being tortured....or *wish* they could to escape the current dreadful "performance" they are being subjected to. |

A wise man once said "Good magic is like good sex... it's just harder to find..."
Bad performers, such as you're describing, are possible proof that the devil really is behind it all... who else could come up with such ruthless modes of deliberate torture? Then again, I know of a lady in Vegas who "has it on good authority" that Copperfield's Flying is proof of how evolved he is in the Kabalah... People believe what the want... it's difficult to change that.

Magic has always been linked to the devilish and diabolical. Look at old magic posters -- they're full of imps and demons and devilish imagery.
Smart performers often play up the possibility of diabolical influences. At least those I consider smart. Look at how (ugh, I have to mention him again -- look out, folks!) Blaine cultivates a spooky persona, and listen to how laypeople talk about him. People always suspect magicians of sorcery, even in this day and age. If you're good enough, you're bound to encounter some frightened responses. I did a simple telephone card prediction for a group once, and one woman freaked out and left the room.

Why on earth would lay people suspect what we do is work of the devil or feel that it is the result of powers supplied by being in league with the devil?
As soon as I am finished slaughtering the ritual goat and am done having the satanic sex that comes with such rituals, I will tell you all some stories.
