There is an effect that I heard Rudy Coby does but I have not seen it, only heard of it. It involves an oversized hourglass that he enters and ends up vanishing out of. Does anyone know anything about this illusion? What the exact effect is, when he came out with it, where it can be seen being performed, etc. I would appreciate hearing anything anyone knows!

He performed it on his 2nd FOX special in 1996.

It is a great trick to watch but its size would make it nearly impossible to present it anywhere but on a Universal sound stage for television. I am guessing it was devised and constructed solely for this special and has not been done since.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Can anyone describe to me what the prop looked like and exactly how the effect went? Or can someone tell me where I can see pictures of it? The reason I am doing this is b/c there are several larger than life hourglass effects out there and I am researching them looking at their similarities and differences, and trying to trace them to their roots and to determine which came first.
Thanks! |

At least twenty foot high, it looked similar to two square plexiglass elevators attatched top to top. I hope that is descriptive enough to give you a sense of what it looked like. He was shackled in leg restraints reminiscent of the Houdini water torture cell and hoisted high into the air and locked hanging face down on the top of the hourglass. It was then rotated downward until he was standing upright, now at floor level and the "Sand" began filling the bpttom container.
Once he was completely covered and there was only seconds left a large cloth with Rudy's likeness/logo unfurrled at the top and when whisked away he was standing there (making the whole illusion even greater in height). Hope this helps.

Doesn't Stephan Soulle (spelling?) have a similar effect in his show in Seattle?

Yes, Steffan does. It is more of a transposition than an escape. He has a very elaborate and creative presentation. I suggest you check it out if you're ever in Issaquah.
