The Sidney H. Radner Collection of Houdini memorabilia, long thought to be going to the Houdini Historical Center in Appleton, is instead going to auction. Radner obtained much of the collection from Houdini's brother, Theo Weiss, who performed under the name Hardeen. He lent a significant portion of his holdings to the Houdini Center on a long-term basis from 1988 until fairly recently. But Radner and the Houdini Center had a falling out over a number of matters, among them terms of continuing the loan and the museum's decision to incorporate an expose of Houdini's famous "Metamorphosis" trick into a permanent exhibit. Last week, Radner confirmed that he would be selling off his picks, leg irons, handcuffs, straitjackets, letters, posters, playbills and other vintage objects on Oct. 30. In a phone interview, he said he had intended to leave the materials to the Houdini Center. Instead, more than 1,000 objects thought to have been personally owned by the famous mystifier will be offered to bidders at the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas. The auction, which starts at 9 a.m. on Oct. 30, is timed to lead up to Oct. 31, the 78th anniversary of the famous escape artist's death. Houdini was born Ehrich Weiss in Budapest in 1874, but was raised from infancy in Wisconsin, first in Appleton, then in Milwaukee. He was a compulsive accumulator of books, manuscripts and vintage apparatus. Las Vegas is an appropriate site for the auction, because it is the home of many of today's prominent conjurors, among them David Copperfield, who has followed in Houdini's footsteps by accumulating an enormous collection of antique magical gear. Radner's collection will be displayed at the Liberace Museum, 1775 E. Tropicana Ave., in Las Vegas, Oct. 17 through 29, prior to the Oct. 30 auction. The auction is set to be shown via Webcast on eBay Live.

I just hope that everything in this auction was truely Houdini's. The last one in LA had some suspect items in it.
I imagine most of it will remain in Las Vegas....DC.
