Any recommendations as to the best way to launder silks?
Just from regular use they can get a bit grungy. They pick up oil and perspiration from your hands, etc. The tt silk in particular could use a bath. Hand wash in cold water? Regular laundry soap? throw them in the dishwasher with the pots and pans maybe?

Use a gentle detergent like Woolite or Drift. Use very little. Let them soak in it to loose the dirt. Then wash on the gentle cycle. Put one or two teaspoons of fabric softner in the water to cut down the static electricity. Use cold water.
Be careful doing this with tie dyes or printed silks. When they spin out from the rinse cycle don't let them set or they can transfer off on each other. I know Rice reccomends dry cleaning on their stuff.

Thanks Richard,
I am only washing my TT silks. The others don't get handled enough to get dirty. Or at least they have not yet

I like to run the silks under cold water, place them in a towel to dry and hang them on the bathroom mirror. When they dry they are perfectly pressed

I found the mirror tip written up in an old book by Joe Ovette from the 1920's.
It does work.

How do you hang them on the mirror? You mean just press them on there while damp?

Richard,
Would you believe that my mom taught me the "silk on mirror" ironing trick in the very early 50s? She also taught me my first rising card tricks. Mom was quite a magician with designing costumes and picking music too. She tried to get me to do magic with cats. But that just never appealed to me. Perhaps it paid to be an inventor's daughter? She could generate ideas 100 miles an hour. (Good cook too!) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
